EOS 90D and 100mm USM IS EF f/2.8L lens not working

My camera shipped with firmware 1.1.1 several years ago when I bought it (which I refreshed by downloading and running the update again today after having some issues with the lens).  Every other lens I have tried with my camera the past few years works fine, but this lens, which I just purchased today,  keeps giving me Err 01.  Firmware 1.1.1 was supposed to fix this issue for both this lens and the 85mm macro, according to technical bulletins here.  If I put the lens on my ancient 20D it functions fine, but I did not buy the lens to use it with that camera.  Am I out of luck or is there another fix for it that I am not aware of?

Hey melkir72, it would be interesting to know how this turns out when you get your system back. If you have the time would you mind posting updates on this problem as you get feedback from Canon.

John nailed it when he pointed out what the firmware update actually addressed.

2. Fixes an issue where error code "Err 01" may be displayed when using EF85mm F1.8 USM or EF100mm F2 USM lenses.

The OP's issue is the f2.8.  The issue is with the body.  2 brand new lenses exhibiting the same behavior.  The common denominator is the camera.

I had contacted Canon yesterday and was told by the rep to send both the lens and the camera in for service.  I don't really see the point of sending the lens if two identical lenses have caused it to have this issue.  And if the lens gets damaged in shipping, I'll have yet another issue to contend with, as I cannot return it to B&H if it gets damaged and will have to pay Canon to repair it.     What kind of turnaround time are people generally having when sending cameras in for service?  I don't want to keep the lens if I cannot use it with this camera, and B&H has a 90 day return policy that I don't want to be exceeded if it takes longer to be repaired.

While the past is no guarantee of the future I have never experienced more than a two week turnaround on repairs.
I also always ship my gear with insurance.
Send both in as advised so the problem can be resolved.

John nailed it again! Canon has turned my gear in 7 to 10 days, always insured it and their packaging was solid. Having a lens known to have a problem will help them evaluate the problem. Send them both and hopefully you get the body back and the issue resolved.

On the bright side, if they can figure out the problem the 100mm will be a welcome addition to your gear.

Back when I was working I had CPS Gold and can say nothing but good about Canon service. Send both camera and lens in.

OK, I'm sending them both off this week for evaluation.

Could you please share any updates regarding this issue? Did Canon service managed to fix the error?

They could not replicate the problem.  I don’t know how or why, so I had it shipped back to me and it no longer does it.  One thing I will say is that their techs don’t read the details on your repair request.  I had multiple calls/emails asking me to send in the lens I already returned or to send in one of my other lenses, despite my repair form clearly stating  I had already returned the other copy and that NONE of my other lenses would produce this error with the camera.
