Do-it-all EF lens for shooting indoor concerts, what lens should I look for? Is it a unicorn?

My son is in jazz band in high school, and I'm looking for a do-it-all lens for shooting his performances. Ideally I'm looking for something at both ends of the zoom spectrum, from closeups with good field of view to longer, wider shots, good low light capabilities, and hopefully not a budget buster. I'm shooting with a 5D MkII, which I'm still trying to learn, I'd rather not move to a different body. Thanks!

What is your budget for a lens. The EF lens lineup has been discontinued all that's selling is remaining stock on shelves. DSLR development is finished and so is EF lens development. Though stuff can be found on the used market. But who knows how long Canon will continue to support the EF Mount and DSLRs.
