Hi everyone, I recently purchased the RF 100-500mm lens. I’ve immediately noticed one minor issue that’s been bothering me: when gripping the zoom ring, it occasionally makes a faint plastic clicking noise, as if the ring has a tiny bit of give. Given the lens’s premium price point, I wasn’t expecting this, and I’m not sure if it’s normal behavior. Just for peace of mind, I wanted to check, have others experienced the same with their copy of this lens? Thanks in advance for your input!

glombardi79, mine is smooth and silent as it is supposed to be, the clicking is not normal! Since you just purchased it, I am going to assume new I would go back to retailer you purchased it from for resolution. Don't let them try and tell you it is normal, if yo were to use it for video the clicking would transfer to your recording, it's not supposed to happen.
It is always a great idea to register your gear with Canon in the event you need to send it to them they will ask you to register the lens. It's also nice because you have record of you equipment in a safe place if ever you need it for insurance purposes, it definitely doesn't hurt.

As a second option to returning it call Canon 1 (800) 652-2666. Depending upon your retailer returning can sometimes be a problem not wanting to deal with.

I have inspected a bit further. I found that the smooth-tights ring is made of thin plastic and deforms under the pressure of the fingers. It has a give in the connection underneath the zoom ring, and this makes the zoom ring click and crack under the pressure of the fingers. I registered a couple of video for the seller and dropped in his WhatsApp. Monday morning I'll make a call to get a solution, hopefully a replacement instead of a repair.
