Did you mean:

28mm 1.8 lens will not focus and makes clicking sounds.

When in MF and I turn the focus ring, it turns forever but makes no adjustment.  When in AF, and half press the shutter, it clicks but makes no adjustment.  Is it trash?  I'm so sad, I love this lens.  Nothing happened... It was working yesterday.  Today I put it on and nothing.

You don't give much equipment information. Two questions:

1. Do other lenses work okay on this same camera?

2. Can you try this lens on another camera?

Yes, both my 50 1.4 and my 70-200 2.8 work fine on the camera body.  All are Canon products.  I do not have another camera body to try the 28mm on.  The camera body itself is the 5D Mark iv.  Even off of the camera body on MF, when I turn the focus ring, it does not appear to adjust.  It turns forever, no resistance at all, in both directions.

Don't know of anyone with ANY EOS camera, film or digital? A camera store?

The turning-the-focus ring behavior you describe is normal when lens is on AF. If it's happening in MF, there's a mechanical problem with the lens. The clicking in AF reinforces that notion. Was the lens dropped or hit against anything?

Have you cleaned the contacts on the lens? It only takes a slight contamination to break contact with the body.

No, nothing happened.  If it is a mechanical problem with the lens, is it something that can be fixed?  Or is that the kind of problem that you just start over for?  With all the EF lenses going by the wayside, I'm looking for options.

And yes I have more camera bodies, but I don't have them with me so I reached out in case this was an issue with an easy fix that I just couldn't find on my own.

Repairing this lens is a question mark.

Used ones are plentiful. It's been around a long time. Here are two of the good dealers, and they have warranties:

I saw one on Amazon, and lots on eBay.

Greetings Briar_Marie,

When the lens is set to Auto Focus (AF), let's press and hold down the AF-ON button on your EOS 5D Mark IV to see if the lens will auto focus or you may try again to press and hold the shutter button halfway down. Some lenses use focus by wire to where we would need to hold down the shutter button halfway down to manually focus the lens.

If the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM lens is still having issues with focusing then we would suggest to send it in to our facility for service. Per review, this lens model is still within service life.

I have tried to register it, but the site seems unable to find "EF 28mm 1.8".  It finds "EF 28mm 2.8, but that's not what I have.  Am I missing something?

I found it... EF 28 f/1.8   Sheesh!
And thank you!
