I try to print with iphone, but alway got this no paper in upper tray error ( I have paper in lower tray), looks like this is a canon software issue, if I can not resolve this, I will need to return this product, this is only two days old.

This printer is the worst printer I think I've ever used.

1. It seems to need constant drivers

2. This no paper in upper casssette issue is continual

NO ONE USES THE UPPER CASSETTE FOR 95% of ALL PRINTING

BUILD A GOOD PRINTER ITS 2017

Best,

Ted

what is the answer to this problem as mine is doing the same

I have done all of these things. How do I get the printer to default to the lower tray. This is a definite pain, and I'm not sure I would purchase another Canon printer. I'm trying to print from a Mac. I've never been able to print from my iPhone. Poor, poor design. 😞

If you are printing a regular 8x11 sized US sheet of paper on a Mac, go to your System Preferences, Printer/Scanner settings and make sure your default paper size says either Letter or 8x11.  If you're printing from a PDF, you must set it's paper size as well.  This way, the printer won't default to the upper tray.  Hope this helps.

I just talked with Canon customer support and they were surprisingly helpful and knowledgable (and not an overseas team!). The rep quickly knew what the issue was and he was right.

I tried printing an email from GMail and, even though I selected pages that had only text from the body of the email, a part of that chain included a PDF. He mentioned to me that the printer recognizes PDFs as pictures and that will tell the printer to print using the upper tray. As soon as I tried printing the single email, rather than the chain, it worked just fine.

Hope that helps at least one of you...

I found a way around it for the Iphone. If you save your picture in i books and open up ibooks on your phone and select print it will give you print options and pring from the lower deck 🙂

There is a default on the iPhone to print. When I do that I clearly see the Canon printer. There is no way to adjust the settings

This would also be something you can manually override on the printer itself. Where you can manually force it to pull from the bottom tray. One of your selling points for these printers Is how you can print from anywhere around your house. And as you can see from this for him it’s frustratingly impossible to do so

I was able to fix the problem on the error message that says,
“Out of paper in top cassette”. Go to the App Store and download (Printershare). Once you do that, PRINT USING THAT APP! Once you have completed that, the printer automatically switches back to the bottom tray where the 8 by 11 paper is. I was then able to go back to the way I normally printed via AirPrint directly from my IPhone.
Hope that helps someone.
I’m sure any app from the App Store would help fix the problem. I used the one I noted above as it was the one I used with my prior canon (MX860) before AirPrint came out.

I have the same exact problem. Poor design! I want to throw it into the trash!!!
