PIXMA G6020 - print has gaps when a large amount of black ink is used

I have a Canon Pixma G6020 that I got sometime in 2024. It's been pretty good, except now, whenever I print something that requires a lot of black ink (was printing something with a black background), it prints fine in the beginning but near the end just becomes full of large gaps.

Colored ink works fine, this only happens with black ink. And only when a lot of black ink is used.

Please see attached image - normal text prints fine, but a large square that requires a lot of ink is not printed correctly. After that, even the text is full of gaps.

What should I do?

Hi G3557,

This issue can be caused if the encoder inside of your PIXMA G6020 is dirty or has a smudge.

To clean the encoder, please follow the steps provided in this Knowledgebase Article:

Canon Knowledgebase - Cleaning the Encoder (Timing) Strip - G6020

If you continue to have difficulties, please contact one of Canon's Technical Support Representatives via phone or chat. To contact a Technical Support Representative, please use the link below to log into your My Canon account:
