Can't print on 5x7 paper in upper photo paper tray, MX922

Canon Pixma MX922 printer, on an iMac.  Trying to print a 5x7 photo using Apple's Preview app.  I'm specifying 5x7 paper in the Print function of the app.  I have the paper loaded in the upper tray which accepts either 4x6 or 5x7.  It keeps printing on 8.5x11 paper in the lower tray.  I read somewhere that the printer will automatically feed from the upper tray if either 4x6 or 5x7 is specified as the paper size when printing from a computer app.  Why is it grabbing the plain papert in the lower tray?
