Canon Vixia HFR800 - can it be used with an external monitor?

I haven't used the HDMI output on the camera yet but my understanding was that the output could only be used in playback mode.

Is it possible to output through the HDMI port in real time - ie for the purpose of running a camcorder monitor attached to the device?

I don't think you can.  In looking at the manual, the HDMI output does appear to only be for playback.
