I am desperately trying to get footage transferred to my computer (both Mac or PC). I no-longer have the DV cable that came with the camera and have purchased a 4 pin to USB that actually fits into the DV port but is not recognized by either computers. Cannon and various tech supports (i.e., BestBuy/Staples) seems to know how to solve this puzzle. I am looking for an actual solution that works. Thank you!

Which Mac? What ports do you have? There is no such thing as a Firewire->USB converter. I hope you have not damaged the camcorder.

The port on the camera is a 4-pin FIREWIRE port. No such thing as a Firewire-to-USB cable.
Try being more clear about what you have. What computer operating systems? What ports do the computers have?
Your camera, I think, also has a Mini-USB port. You cannot transfer video thru USB....it's for still photos. Movies only transfer thru Firewire. Are you jamming a mini-USB cable into the DV-Firewire port?
