Capturing dv/hdv to iMovie on a MAC with no FireWire port

If I buy a Thunderbird-to-FireWire adapter, will iMovie automatically recognize my older HV20 camcorder, or at least, know what to do to capture the DV? I no longer have the DVD that came with the camcorder. I want to save all my tapes to disc so that I get rid of the HV20 and just use my SD card-based device.

Answered my own question. I happened to pass by an Apple store so l splurged on the thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter, but found it came with 800 mb/s Firewire connector. After I upgraded my 400 mb/s cord, everything worked well with iMovie recognizing both my HV20 (ntsc) and my MP500i (pal) camcorders.
