Canon XHA1 video camera HD specs

I'm shooting with the Canon XHA1 video camera.  I'm just starting to shoot HD.  The specs state that the camera shoots HD at 1440 x 1080 (16:9), but that is not an actual 16:9.  The real 16:9 ratio would be 1920 x 1080.  My question is 1. Why would they call 1440 x 1080 a 16:9 ratio, and 2. How do I handle that with my final output to DVD.  Once I edit in Adobe Premiere Pro, should I  bump up the output to 1920 x 1080 a true 16:9 ratio, or should I down size to 1280 x 720 also 16:9 ratio but within the original resolution.

Very strange and confusing.

Hi lcoleman01!

Thanks for the post!

I apologize if this has caused any confusion.  The manual for the camera lists all of the resolutions available and it lists 1440 x 1080 as an SD 4:3 (Standard Def. 4:3) aspect ratio.  It is also for still image recording.  HD video is recorded at 1080i, which is an interlaced 1920 x 1080.
