How do I make sure my camera battery doesn't swell?

So my old battery actually swelled and I had to get a new battery. I was wondering how I should charge it? Does it damage the battery if I completely drain it to 0% or if I completely charge it to 100%? or should I keep the battery at 30-40% and charge it upto to 80-90%?

I don't use my camera often, maybe one or two shots a day but for a lot of use maybe once or twice a month when I go out or get glammed. So should I also charge it often or do I just leave it and only charge when I have use for it?

Greetings,

The two most important things are to use a Canon brand battery and charge in a Canon charger. If you have a R Series body, the battery can be charged in the camera using a usb-c power connection.

Batteries can be charged to 100%. They should be discharged to about 10% before recharging. If you are not going to use the battery for an extended period, charge the battery to about 40 or 50% and store outside the camera. Never store your camera with a battery installed if you're not going to use it in the coming week. This is the safest way to store the camera and battery.

With the growing popularity of e-bikes and the high cost of their batteries a lot of information has been promulgated on battery care. Unfortunately I have never seen any info from a battery manufacturer; generally the bike supplier and they are not always consistent.

But the general gist is: 1. never run a battery to full dead, 2. don't charge to 100% and then let it sit idle - charge full the day you are going to use it, 3. for storage have it between 20% and 80%. They sell programmable chargers for e-bikes, but many Canon battery chargers don't show charge level.

DJI drones have "Intellgent Batteries". If they have been sitting for a few days they go into hibernation mode and self-discharge to around the 40-60% level.

Based on my drone experience swelling seems to be random. I have five batteries and rotate use between them all. One swelled and the rest haven't.

Lithium camera batteries can swell when they reach their end. How old is yours?
