Can anyone tell me if the Promatic 5600 flash that I use on my Rebel G will work correctly on the 5D Classic?

No that flash is NOT COMPATIBLE with digital cameras. That flash uses off the film TTL which relies on light reflected off the film. This doesn’t work with digital cameras because there’s no film. It will fire at full output only. So stick with a Canon EX series or EL-100 or EL-1 speedlite. The EOS Rebel G supports E-TTL. For best compatibility with both cameras newer models with an LCD will work with full compatibility. Newer models such as the EL-100, 90EX, 270EX, 270EX II, 320EX & 430EX III-RT will work with compatibility limitations. Certain functions will on work with an EOS Digital camera released in or after 2007. Using these speedlites on older cameras will result in certain features not working. Such as no HSS (high speed sync), No FEC and No AF Assist. Intermittent Flash Firing is not supported on older cameras for an AF Assist Beam. Only the older IR AF assist beam will work. An older flash such as the 430EX II will work.

"Correctly" is relative. It may work as a manual flash only. Its trigger voltage could be a concern, though. If you have a meter to measure it, you're looking for something 6-8 volts. If it's triple-digit numbers, forget it.

Safest bet is to consign it to your film camera collection.
