On the hot shoe itself. Not on the flash unit. That is a single pin manual flash unit. It won’t work on your camera at all. Since the camera doesn’t have that pin. Your camera requires a Canon brand flash unit to work. A Canon brand flash doesn’t require the center pin to work. It uses the smaller 4 pins to communicate with the flash. My picture below shows a compatible flash unit with all the communication pins needed to work with your camera. Then the hot shoe itself on your camera and what makes it incompatible. With single pin Manual only flash units. A single pin Manual flash cannot be automatically controlled by the camera. You must manually set the power level.

Hi. I have a EOS 250d and a godox mf-r76 but I cannot get the flash to work with any setting.

it is connected to the camera

the power is on

cannot find any menu or setting on the camera or the flash to allow the camera to control the flash

I’m new to external flashes so sorry if I’ve worded this badly. Help very much appreciated. TIA

Are you using the camera in live view (the rear LCD screen). 3rd Party flashes won’t fire in Live View but a Canon flash will. Also most 3rd Party flashes won’t work on your camera. They require the center pin on the hot shoe to work. A Canon flash doesn’t need that pin to work. Instead they use the 4 small pins to communicate with the camera. Also what mode are you trying to shoot in on the top mode dial. M, Av, Tv, P, Auto or any other automated shooting mode.

What is the Full model of that flash is it godox mf-r76c or without the “C” at the end. Your flash unit cannot work on your camera without the center pin. You’ll have to use a Canon flash unit. There’s no way around this limitation. Also 3rd Party manual flash units aren’t compatible either. This is due to the missing center pin on the hot shoe. Basically your camera can only work with Canon flashes.

The 250D manual, page 174, points out that non-EX/EL flashes will not work, period. Here it is if you have not yet downloaded the manual.

https://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/4/0300034864/02/EOS_250D_Advanced_User_Guide_EN.pdf

I have the same flash. I learned by reading manuals for my EOS DSLRs that there is a Live View Menu setting to disable Silent Shooting to have non-Canon flashes fire in Live View.

It doesn't look like the 250D has this function/option. It looks like you are out-of-luck with the Godox, or any other non-Canon Speedlite.

None of Canon’s Rebel series will fire a 3rd Party flash in Live View. There’s also no option to Disable Silent Shooting mode either. Those options are only offered with higher end cameras. All Canon brand speedlites will fire in live view. It also automatically disables silent shooting mode when a Canon brand flash unit is used.

Well to some degree all 3rd Party manual flashes are compatible with all cameras. But once Automatic Flash Exposure comes in it’s a different story. Every camera manufacturer uses their own protocols for TTL flash exposure. Then there hot shoes may all look the same. But the other smaller pins do different functions or have a different amount of pins. Sometimes the pins are in a different spot. But the center pin is always in the same spot. Except that Canon has removed it from their entry level cameras. All of Canon’s flashes work without it and they never needed it.

In theory a manual flash would work on any camera because there's no automation involved. All you need is a firing trigger. Yours is an exception. I don't know if all Rebels have the same limitation, or just the SLx models (the 250D is an SL3), or what.

Live View is using the rear LCD Screen to take and compose pictures. As far as new Canon Ring Lite and Twin Lite flashes they have the MR-14EX II & MT-26EX-RT. For used models you can look into the older MR-14EX (original/ classic) then the MT-24EX flash units. Note the older flash units are NOT COMPATIBLE with the in camera flash menu. But they’ll still work. Most options are grayed out or missing. But those options can be set on the flash unit itself. These are dedicated flash units for Macro photography only certain Canon lenses can be used with them. Some require special adapters for those to be attached to the lens. What lens are you using for Macro Photography. Please provide the FULL and COMPLETE name of the lens in question.
