Even though your EOS R7 has the new multifunction accessory shoe, it does still retain the additional five contact pins for compatibility with older Speedlites. The Speedlite 430EX, 430EX II and 430EX III-RT do not have a weather sealing part around the speedlite foot so they will fit perfectly on the EOS R7.

If the Speedlite you have is the original 430EX then the camera menu cannot be used to set the settings, only the buttons on the Speedlite itself. If the Speedlite is a 430EX II or 430EX II-RT then the camera menus will work to set the functions of the Speedlite.

FEC (Flash Exposure Compensation) can be set from the camera menu on older speedlites such as the original 430EX. But the in camera flash menu IS NOT COMPATIBLE. Note the speedlite's FEC overrides the camera body's setting. Also note the old "IR"/ Red grid pattern AF Assist Beam IS NOT COMPATIBLE with mirrorless cameras. When such a speedlite is used on an EOS R series camera. The speedlite's AF Assist Beam AUTOMATICALLY switches to Intermittent Flash Firing. Even if the speedlite has a choice between IR and Intermittent Flash Firing. Note depending on the AMBIENT LIGHTING the camera body may project an LED AF Assist Beam. As long as the AF Assist Beam is Enabled on the speedlite and the camera is set to enable. NOT LED ONLY or Disable and the focus mode is NOT set to Servo AF.

I had either forgotten or was unaware of this and had been setting my FEC on the speedlite not using the Flash Control menu. Using the Flash Control Menu to set and clear FEC is much more convenient and efficient.

Personally I've always set FEC on the camera instead of the speedlite. In case I switch between speedlites then the FEC will be applied to the other speedlite mounted. Unless FEC was dialed in directly on the speedlite itself. Older speedlites which lack an LCD. Have partial compatibility with the Speedlite Control Menu (SCM) to set Rear Curtain Sync. Since there isn't a way to set that function on the speedlite. But High Speed Sync (FP Flash) can be set directly on the speedlite. The 220EX, 380EX & 420EX are the only older speedlites which rear curtain sync cannot be set directly on the speedlite itself.
