Aloha,

I recently upgraded our old Canon 50d to a Canon r6 and my husband found his old speedlite 430EX flash in storage. We were wondering if it was compatible to the new camera. It fits in the flash zone fine but we couldn’t get it activated and haven’t found anything online other than 430EX II discussions.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Mahalo,

Alina

Does it fire if you press the Pilot Lamp Test button? The 430EX should work with the R6, since the 430EXIII-RT is listed as an accessory in the R6 manual.

Older EX series speedlites work on newer cameras. But there are NOT compatible with the in camera flash menu. What do you mean by "couldn't get the flash activated". Is the pilot light on. Does the speedlite's LCD screen say "E-TTL" or "TTL". If it says "TTL" the speedlite is NOT communicating correctly with your camera. Also flash photography IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the Fully electronic shutter. Use mechanical or electronic first curtain shutter. As a test set the camera to One Shot AF. Then put the lens cap on. The speedlite should emit a series of strobe burst (Intermittent Flash Firing) from the main flash tube. This is what's called an AF Assist Beam. The IR Grid Pattern is NOT compatible with ANY mirrorless camera. This test shows that the flash does work. The camera needs to be set to One Shot AF. For this test to work the AF Assist Beam doesn't work with Servo AF.
