You will need to use the AD-E1 hot shoe adapter to mount the speedlite to the multi purpose hot shoe. Due to the speedlite having weather sealing. All features are retained such as the in camera flash menu. The IR AF Assist Beam will not work. The speedlite will fire an Intermittent AF Assist Beam when the camera has a difficult time Autofocusing in low light. The camera body decides if the speedlite or the camera will emit the AF Assist Beam. This is depending on ambient lighting conditions.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D & Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM

It should be. While I cannot find a matrix of camera bodys and speedlite units, the EL-1 mentions it is compatible with "Type-A EOS cameras (E-TTL II/E-TTL autoflash)" of which the EOS R series cameras should all be Type A.
