I have a Canon EOS and a 300D Speedlight 430EX 111 which I left batteries the in until they leaked!

I cleaned the Speedlight battery holder but whatever I do I can find no life. Its years since I used it and can't remember if it shows life when not connected to a camera. Can I assume that I've killed it?

Hi BML do you have a budget in mind. Do you regularly shoot in low light conditions. If so certain newer speedlites won't be to provide an AF Assist Beam. The speedlites are all other wise compatible. Newer Canon speedlites such as the 90EX, EL-100, 270EX, 270EX II, 320EX, 430EX III/ III-RT won't be able to provide an AF Assist Beam. These speedlites mentioned above use "Intermittent Flashes" for AF Assist. This feature is used in the built in flash to provide an AF Assist Beam. In order for those flashes to provide AF Assist you'll need a camera released in 2007 onward. These 2007 and newer cameras have what is called the "speedlite control menu" to control flash settings from the camera body. This was the same time Canon introduced the "smart" hot shoe. Starting with the 430EX II and 580EX II. The camera body could control speedlite settings from the speedlite control menu. Speedlites released prior to the 430EX II and 580EX II Can not be controlled from the speedlite control menu on 2007 and newer cameras. The camera body will read "Speedlite is turned off or incompatible speedlite is attached".

-Demetrius

40D, 5D IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II, EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM

430EX III-RT & 600EX II-RT

@Demetrius,

Yes. Which is why I recommended a new camera over a flash. We have a 20 yr difference in available technologies here. I personally would stick with the onboard flash. If I did buy one to pair, I would only go with a 3rd party in this case and use manual focus, etc. The camera is the limiting factor here as you pointed out earlier.

That's if the 3rd party flash will work properly with OP's Digital Rebel/ EOS 300D. If he's using an E-TTL compatible speedlite. I found that new 3rd party speedlites sometimes don't work properly on pre-2007 camera bodies. I tied a new a 3rd party Neewer speedlite on a Canon EOS 10D years ago and it didn't work properly. It was probably how Canon implemented the speedlite control menu with new speedlites. Leaving backwards compatibility for Canon's own speedlites that don't support the speedlite control menu.

-Demetrius

40D, 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM

430EX III-RT & 600EX II-RT

I resent dumping equipment especially stuff that I've used from when I took a Motorcaravan round the coast of the UK coast to write a guide to sites with a view of the sea. Would any of the following fit?

CANON SPEEDLITE 177A FLASHGUN (35MM) £19.00

CANON SPEEDLITE 200E FLASHGUN (35MM) £20.00

CANON SPEEDLITE 300TL FLASHGUN £29.00

CANON SPEEDLITE 550EX FLASHGUN £49.00

CANON SPEEDLITE 600EX-RT £179.00

Any Canon EX/ EL speedlite will work with your camera. The 550EX and 600EX-RT are compatible with your camera which uses E-TTL flash metering. Note these speedlites especially the 600EX-RT are quite large units. They may also be too heavy to hold on your camera because your camera is small. In comparison to the speedlites you mentioned above. Older E, EZ and TL speedlites are not compatible with your camera. They use A-TTL or TTL flash metering which is only compatible on EOS 35mm film cameras.

-Demetrius

40D, 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM

430EX III-RT & 600EX II-RT
