I have had my Speedlite 580exii for a little less than two years. It has rarely been used. I am a DJ and I sometimes take pictures. The flash does not seem to be communicating with the camera. The contacts are clean. I know it is not the camera because my 220EX works fine. I have been on the internet trying to find a solution. Did Canon know about this problem? Is that why it is discontinued? It is a fairly new product. Any solutions?

The 580EX II is an excellent unit and was discontinued only because it was replaced by a more advanced unit (600EX-RT) and not because it had issues.

For starters make sure the Speedlite is pushed all the way forward into the hot shoe and the slide is locked into place. If you need to remove the rubber boot (in case it is bent and interfering with the contacts) you can do that too.

Honestly, it just sounds like it is not making a good connection.
