60D not recognizing external flash

I have a 580 EX II flash and when it it off camera, my 60d says "The menu cannot be displayed...Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off." The flash is on but the camera's menu function will not find the flash and allow and functions to be set.

Wireless function is set to Enable (in camera)...580 EX II set to slave via flash LCD. Am I setting something wrong?

Flash works fine in the hotshoe, just not off camera.

Any suggestions??

ps...Syl if you're around...I just finished reading your book "Speed Lighter's Handbook"...great book, but I could not find the answer to this problem in the book ;>)

To make this thread possibly a resource for future readers who might have the same issue, could you let us know what the underlying issue was and how you fixed it?
