topic Lide 600F - problem scanning negatives in Scanners

I am using a Canoscan Lide 600F with Windows, used it for years, excellent results. I decided to scan some old colour negatives, the first go worked and I was delighted. Next day, using precisely the same settings, it produced an error message. I detached the film adapter, did an ordinary pdf, re-attached the film adapter (same settings as before) and once more it worked ok. I changed the film strip and then got the error message once again. I cannot see why this should work sometimes and not others and wonder if anyone has a solution. The error message is "The film could not be detected. Please check if the Select Source is correct, or confirm the film is set correctly and execute preview".
