Hello everybody, a couple of months ago I bought a Canon LIDE 400 Scanner "Opened But Not Used" on Ebay.. It came without a USB cable but I bought a USB-C cable which works fine with my Android phone.

However when I set it up on either my desktop (Windows 11 Pro) or laptop (Windows 11 Home) it seems to set up fine, it asks me to disconnect then reconnect the USB cable and setup is completed. The scanner arm traverses under the platen. But when I try to scan a photo with the scanner connected to either computer with either USB-C or USB 3.0 I get the message "Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons - Scanner is turned off - USB cable is disconnected. Code 2,156,33".

Is there a particular spec cable I need for this or is there another fault ?

I recently bought a Canon LIDE 400 "Opened but not used". It installs but won't scan. I've posted here about but received no reply. I've searched for similar problems , tried what they said but nothing works. At the moment it is a novelty doorstop. I'm not "loyal" to any brand though my previous scanner was an HP Scanjet G3110 and it worked.

Based on my current experience I cannot recommend Canon LIDE 400 scanners to anyone except an enemy.

Greetings,

I would have returned the product as soon as I knew it didn't work. Unfortunately the window to do this is probably gone now. The cable required needs to support power and data transfer, as the scanner gets its power from its USB connection. Cables are not created equally and just because it works with one product doesn't mean that it necessarily supports another. I suggest you try using the cable that came with the scanner.

I build my own PCs and at the same time I bought it I was building my new PC so although it didn't work I thought it may be a software problem which I could sort out later. It came without a USB cable but I've tried 3 without result. I've also been onto Technical Support without success but they've said they will check further and email me. It cost me £61 so the best thing may be to sell it Spares Or Repairs and buy another scanner.

I don't know what the standard of the cables are. I do know that the USB-C to USB-C cable is what I use with with my Galaxy S24 phone and that it charges super speed and also transfers data.

Spot on John. In the box. 🙂

@Thegadget1945,

Sorry your open box didn't come with the cable. Since you're a PC builder look at the properties of your USB ports in device manager and see how many milliwatts/power it supplies. It might be capped and you might be able to adjust it with a drop down. Cables are not created equally so you may need to experiment and find one that supplies the necessary power and data, plus the pin configuration needs to match.

Maybe source one from the Canon Parts Dept.

I've been doing some searching and I have concluded that the Type CTM designation is really stating Type C with TM indicating trademark.

The printer manual does state to use the cable that came with the printer cannot be used for other devices, so that may mean it has some special configuration. Contacting Canon would be the correct option.

Just confirming that you downloaded both the printer driver package and the scanner driver.

You could download the free trial of VueScan by Hamrick Software. If that works you would narrow it down to a Canon driver issue. If it doesn't its a device problem.

VueScan detects the scanner but when I try to use it to scan a photo it says "Ensure the locking (transport) switch is unlocked" (It is). If I try the troubleshooter I get through it and none of the problems listed apply. There's no exclamation mark in Device Manager. Pressing the Scan button on the scanner simply results in the 2 , 156 , 33 error code.
