The same thing has happened to me - a single cartridge (Chroma Opimiser - CO) is stuck, and won’t come out.

I was wondering if there is a DIY fix for this, or whether I need to try to get an engineer out to fix it, which will be very expensive, because it’s out of warranty...

Canon UK took me through all the various ‘switch off / on’ options to no avail - it seems it’s a mechanical issue.

Hi Dragon44,

Ink cartridges being stuck in the Pro-1000 series printers is not a common occurrence, but it may happen for various reason. That's why we recommend customers call and talk to one of our technical support representatives. I can not say if the previous cases were resolved or required repaired.

I posted earlier on this. A Canon engineer visited last week, and confirmed what I already knew - the CO cartridge was stuck. After a lot of pushing and wiggling, he finally got it freed, but then it wouldn’t click back in again. The cartridge next door (Blue) was also stuck. The engineer advised me that any repair would mean a strip-down of the printer, from the top down, involving several hours of labour, which made it uneconomic to repair. And, it’s out of warranty, of course...He told me he had not seen this problem before, so just my bad luck eh? So, a top-of-the-range professional printer, costing about £1000 (I’m in London) and used only lightly as an amateur, is now scrap; simply because the cartridge mechanism failed; with a total of about 3 ink exchanges only. Now I have to make a decision about whether to buy another Pro-1000, or go to Epson. Not happy.

Hi Jobetim,

Thanks for your follow-up response! I have the identical CO cartridge stuck problem and share your frustration. Now that I know it is viewed as uneconomical to repair I will need to decide on a new printer or attempt the repair myself. However, per Technical Support there are no service manuals, technical drawings or schematics available to support repairing it yourself.

I had the same problem and also received the same respone from canon, really a bad construction.

However I managerd a workaround.

The issue seems to be a spring that's yamming/breaks off, you can see part of this mechanism in the little square holes on the bottom of where you put in each cartridge.

No real way of reaparining these as, as the customer support already said it requires stripping the whole thing down. However, the printer does not have any sensor for feeling that the sring itelf is working as long as the cartridge is pushed in so that the chip connects it still works, mind the acutal sledge helping it to "get out".

Hence with a pair of pliers and a little bit of wiggling you manage to get the old cartridge out. THen you are able to put the new one in. It sits a littl bit uptilted but the stem sucking in the ink and sealing on the cartridge are well constructed enought to work without leakage and the since the chip is also connected the printer manages to "mount" the cartridges. They also work as they should as far as I know when the printer agitats them.

Not the best answer and I know that Canon won't be to happy. But if they manage to construct it this well and won't bother to repair it, at least it can hopefully make the printer usable for us coustomers as more than just an oversized paperweight as the printing-quality is really superb.

I hope this helps

Thanks Hattman!

I’ll try your workaround. Did you find that all of the ink cartridges became stuck (interlinked), or that others worked when one was stuck? I haven’t run low enough on the other cartridges yet to test it. However, it appears that the spring in the square hole is missing in more than one cartridge.

The saga is over. M<STRIKE>y</STRIKE> Canon Pro-1000, with its stuck cartridge, has been written off, as it is not economical to repair it. A very expensive outcome. Canon has offered me 1 year of additional warranty on the new one, so fingers crossed..but the bottom line is that this is not a great advert for this product.

My printer is barely utilized. I think I have less then 300 copies printed. This is my 2nd PBK cartridge replacement. PBK Spring release cartridge is not working and cartridge seems to be stuck. It seems that the spring release is disengaged or no longer attached. No action on the cartridge when press it in for cartridge release change oppose to the other cartridges. It just sits flat.

Is this a Canon documented problem, and what are the options.

My sympathies, but I'm afraid if a cartridge gets stuck, as mine was, and the printer is out of warranty, then your £1000 printer has just become a very heavy pile of junk, and, if you want to print again, it's off to your local Canon dealer to buy a new one - or at least that's the approach adopted by Canon UK, who basically washed their hands of the whole problem when this happened to me. The ink bays at the bottom of the printer are only accessible by an engineer approaching from the top down, and guess what? It's takes so long to do this that they'd charge more for the service than the cost of a replacement.

In short, this is a manufacturing failure, and Canon will do nothing to help you if your warranty has expired.

The Canon Pro-1000 is a great printer, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy one whilst this problem remains.

Hi to you all.

I have had a Canon Imagegraf Pro 1000 since September 2017 so it is now out of warranty. It produces superb prints and I have never had a problem until I came to change all my 12 inks for the second time. Nine cartridges were changed with no problem but three cartridges would not release.

I live in Portugal and had a "nightmare" getting in contact with someone who could help. Passed from one source to another until I eventually got through to Canon Professional dept who handle large format printers. After a couple of days I got a quote on a mileage and hourly bases for a technician to come from Lisbon to me in the Algarve. This would probably cost a small fortune.

I have an exhibition booked so in desperation I came up with the idea to use a plastic tweezer. I can only describe it as the type of tweezers used to turn over food frying in a pan. It has a serated edge to the grip. Anyway, I am sure you all know what I am talking about. They would slide either side of the cartridge and with a bit of strong riggleing I managed to release all three cartridges and replace them.

The three replacements are stuck as before but at least I have another session of use for about a year and will then probably have to repeat the exercise. No question this is a major problem and should be solved by Canon. This was not a cheap printer to buy.

I also operate a Canon Pro-1000 and the Cartridge retaining springs do fail and Canon know this well. The good news is that the cartridges will still engage without the retaining clip and the printer will still perform, or at least it does in my case. There is absolutely no reason to junk the printer. I initially placed a bit of gaff across the cartridge but this isn't even necessary. It is frustrating and when I upgrade/expand my offering to clients I will ensure I have extended warranties in place.

I hope similar issues don't present with the Pro-2000 and Pro-4000 although they use different ink delivery.

Now to find out why my Top Feed has stopped functioning...

My problem was not how to keep a cartridge in, but how to get an empty stuck one out!
