You could try executing roller cleaning from the printer driver.

Also, just try wiping the roller with a microfiber cloth.

Depending on how old the printer is and your enviromental conditions the rubber could be hardened/dried out.

This message began popping up occasionally a few weeks back, as the printer would fail to load a sheet of matte photo paper, despite there being one or many loaded in the queue.

This never used to happen. Ever. The printer had loaded paper successfully for years.

Now, it occasionally fails to grab the next sheet, and gives the warning about paper being out.

It appears that there is a single rubber wheel responsible for grabbing and advancing the next sheet of paper. Does this need to be cleaned? If so, with what?

Otherwise, if there is some adjustment I might need to look at, please tell me.

Thank you, and have a great day!

I assume the only thing to use is plain water, maybe a tiny bit of dish soap? Getting something on the roller that doesn't come off entirely would end up creating an even worse problem, I imagine, with a discolored stream running through the center of every photograph. Have you ever had to do the same?

I would use a dry microfiber cloth first.
