topic Pro-1100 Leaves Sight Vertical Scratch Marks on Back of Prints in Professional Photo Printers

Hi,

I am printing 4x6 postcards using RedRiver Pecos River Gloss on my Pro-1100. When I print the backside (address etc.) on the regular paper side, the front (photo gloss print side) has little vertical scratch marks (2" apart, 1" left and right of center), what I would guess are the rollers or guides on the backside? I don't think this initially was happening, so I'm not sure if a setting got changed. Anyone have any idea if this is fixable?

It's not a problem usually, since only for postcards do I need to print on two sides. And yes, I know that they will get worse damage when mailed, but I would like them to be at their best and not pre-scratched before being mailed.

I'm using Professional Print & Layout, Red River media types and profiles. I've tried adjusting paper thickness, used different media types, but they all have similar scratch marks on the back. I've used matte photo paper as well, and they have it as well (but it's less noticeable). The scratching is much worse if I print the photo side first and then the back regular paper.

Anyhow, not really sure if I can actually fix this issue and can't think of anything else to do at the moment.

Let me know if you can think of any possible solutions.

Thanks!

Hi dwa! Thanks for contributing to the Canon Community. I see that you are getting some scratch marks on your paper when trying to make postcards.

Changing the media type (paper profile) or quality settings on your computer will not help. They will only affect the colors on the page. However, adjusting the paper thickness settings was a good step. There are a few more ideas that you can try.

First, I would recommend increasing the wait time between printing on the front and printing on the back. Although, the paper can be dry to the touch within a minute or two, it can take up to a day for the colors to fully absorbed and dry on the paper. You can try printing on one side, waiting a day, and then print on the reverse side.

Second, you can enable the Prevent Paper Abrasion setting on the printer. To find this setting on the printer's operation panel, you must select Various Settings from the main menu (home screen), and then choose Printer Settings. You should turn off the Prevent Paper Abrasion setting when you are done printing your postcards.

The following section of the manual has information regarding the Prevent Paper Abrasion setting:
https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/Manual/All/PRO-1100%20series/EN/UG/ug_d005.html

Please note that turning Prevent Paper Abrasion on can affect print quality and print speed.

The last suggestion I can make would be to use a different type of paper. I understand that you did try using Matte Paper as well. If you have a third type of paper, please try printing on both sides. You can print a photo on one side and text on the back side. If you do not have a third type of paper, I would recommend that you try purchasing some Canon paper and using it. When printing on the third paper type, please make sure that you wait a day before you print on the back side.

If none of these options help, I would recommend contacting Canon Support. If you have already created a Canon Account and registered the printer, you can reach them by dialing toll-free 1-800-652-2666. If you haven't created a Canon account, you can do that through the following website:
https://myid.canon/canonid/#/login

If you want to write back, please tell us how you tried adjusting the paper thickness settings for the printer. What steps did you take?

I hope this helps. Thanks again.

If your frontal surface gets damaged when you print on the back side, just simply put an office paper sheet to protect printed surface. But since you probably print with top feed, I'm not sure if printer will be able to grab card together with office sheet, so maybe using back manual feed will help, but then you will need to print few card images on one big sheet and then cut it.
