Hi, I notice there's almost a tapping / clicking noise when the printer is printing (included video here). I wonder if this is normal? Just bought the printer earlier today, trying to figure out if it's a defective unit...

I believe that is just the sound the print head makes as it travels back and forth across the paper spraying ink.

Hi, themagiceight. I hope you're doing well.

I'm having this same issue, and I just got the printer. It's doing this right out of the box. I noticed that the click can vary in volume, even approaching more of a knocking noise, and it's always at roughly the halfway point of the print head's travel back to the right from the left. I used a flashlight to see where the print head is when the sound occurs, and that's the exact spot every time. Is that where yours is doing it too? I haven't heard this issue in anyone else's videos I've seen on YouTube and elsewhere, so I can say with confidence that it's not normal. The big question is whether it's a sign of something wrong that will cause premature failure of the printer (like, right after the warranty runs out lol).

I tried to chat with customer support, but they told me I would have to call and let them listen to the printer in action. Their hours of operation are the same as my work schedule, so I can't do this, as the printer is at my house, not at the office. I was told this would be the only option before they will consider any support for it, even though I offered to provide a recording I made of the sound when I first encountered it. So, I'm not sure I can depend on Canon for help at this point. If someone else has experienced this issue with the printer, hopefully they'll come across your post and offer insight into a possible fix.

I'm curious, do you get the same sounds with larger paper of the same weight? I'm getting similar sounds with 5x7 paper which looks like what you are using from the video. But when I try the same exact paper from the same vendor but at 11x17, there's no banging sound. Makes me wonder if the larger surface area from the larger paper makes it easier to pull down with the paper-handling vacuum system.

I've had to RMA this printer twice at this point (due to unrelated horizontal banding), and both replacements do the exact same thing. Not sure what causes the noise, but it appears to be normal. I had the same observation though — it only occurs on smaller sizes.

Hi, eceforge. I'm having it with every type of paper, every print setting, and every size. It is always on the print head's return to the starting position (moving from left to right), almost exactly halfway across the width of the printer as it moves that direction. Sometimes it's quiet like a small click (particularly when the print head is moving slowly), and sometimes it's more like a knock (when it's moving fast). My hunch is that it's not supposed to do this and that it is indicative of something that's going to wear out/break prematurely.
