Running the printer with empty ink cartridges will very likely damage your print head. The design of the Canon print head and printing process relies on the ink for cooling.

I hope the Canon reps respond with a definitive answer, but I have read many times that even when printing B&W there are some color inks used because the black ink is not true black.

Hi,

I bought this printer only to print on black and white. The color cartuches have run out because of the cleaning cycles.
So basically the only cartuches with ink are always MBK, PBK, GY and CO.
I print on Luster paper with no issues, but when I try to print on Canon Photo Paper Pro Premium Matte, I get a purple tone in all my black and white pictures. Even if I try other paper but with ICC profile of Premium Matte.
I'm asumming the printer is trying to apply some kind of color correction due to the warm tone of matte papers.

I can't afford to buy all the color ink cartuches to only print black and white.
If my assumtions are correct, could I know what ink I need to use to keep the tonality neutral to black and white.
I'd say it is probably PC but I'd like to know before I start testing and wasting ink and paper.
If my assumtions are wrong, could you help me figure out why I get the purple tone?

Thanks!
