topic PIXMA PRO-200 Do you need to register the paper? in Professional Photo Printers

Hi, I am new to photo printing. I bought a Pixma PRO-200 and I really like the photos it produces so far.

I have tried a wide variety of papers and I am really confused about what “Registering” the paper on the front panel of the printer actually does and if one needs to do it at all.

The Canon print driver (from iPhone) or PP&L software (from Mac) has entries to set the paper size and type when printing. Is it really necessary to set the size and type on the menu of the printer as well? So far my testing has shown that changing it on the printer itself doesn’t seem to matter one bit. Is that a step I can just skip? What does changing the paper type or registering it on the printer itself actually accomplish?
