Called Canon Support this morning - actually got thru to a helpful person.

Yes, Canon confirms there are TWO different versions of the PRO-100 here in the US. The older version that I have, shipped with firmware version 1.1. There's a newer version that shipped with firmware 2.01 - which started showing up somewhere in the 2016/17 timeframe. ONLY the newer version can be updated with this published 1.3 firmware updater. Canon support says the only *official* way to tell the difference is the serial number of the printer.

Canon support did say they are currently working on a firmware updater for the OLDER version of the PRO-100. But there's no time frame for release - their resources are being impacted by COVID-19 (and presumably their recent ransomware attack, but I didn't ask about that). I did get a promise to send me a notification when the firmware updater for the OLD printers is available.

So if you have firmware 1.1, you're stuck there for now, until they release another firmware update (for old printers).

If you have firmware 2.01, the current published update should successfully get you to firmware 2.031.

Greetings,
Are you using a USB cable to flash the FW?

This updater will upgrade your printer's firmware to version 2.031. To perform this upgrade, a USB cable and a computer are needed. If your printer's firmware version is already 2.031 or later, the update is not necessary. To check your printer's firmware version, refer to the Update Procedure included in the downloaded file.

We cannot tell from your post what method you are using.

As mentioned above, you need to use the USB cable. I upgraded my firmware yesterday and (on a Mac) the installer was explicit with those directions.

To check your firmware version put a piece of paper in the rear (top) tray and then press the resume button until the light blinks twice. That will cause the printer to print out a sheet that contains the firmware version.

yes, i am hard wired to the printer using a cable. i did it to both windows 7 32 bit and windows 10 64 bit. both failed. The printer is on, then I can hear the computer acknoledge the printer is turned off during the process and then it gives me an an error. the process shuts down my printer. i belive the issue is that i do not have 1.2 installed. you thinK this is the issue? i have even made sure that the printer is using the cable by checking the canon IJ network tool.

I just did the paper feed and hodling the resume and it printed out 2 columes with the colors of my print cartridges and with Ver. 1.100 on it.

My PRO-100 is normally connected to my Windows 10 PC (64-bit with all the latest Windows Updates) via WiFi. Before I updated the firmware this morning, my PRO-100 firmware version was 1.100.

I downloaded the updater, then connected the printer to the PC using a long USB cable. The firmware update proceeded as advertised, with no error messages. After the update, I disconnected the USB cable, unplugged the AC power, plugged the power back in, and powered on the printer. I did a nozzle check, which also prints the firmware version, and the firmware version now reads Ver. 2.031.

As a final check, I printed one of my photos, and everything appears normal. I didn't notice any particular improvement or change, either, but I don't seem to have broken anything.

At least with my setup, the firmware update appears to have been successful.

--Larry

Tried the following (W10 computer setup):

1. delete and reinstall printer driver

2. turned off wifi

3. printed a nozzle check.

4. run the updater - process starts, then I get the Windows sound for a disconnected USB device, then printer starts flashing three orange lights (which relates to incorrect position of paper trays- I know thats wrong becasue i just printed nozzle check), then installation aborts. After error message clears the computer beeps againg and printer is reconnected.

5. When I go to use the printer the next time after the update failure the first thing it does is eject a page.

For the folks who got it to work - can you see what it is doing? Description is pretty vague.

@jrhoffman75 wrote:

For the folks who got it to work - can you see what it is doing? Description is pretty vague.

When I updated the firmware, there was nothing much to see other than what the updater told me I should see. Before running the updater, I connected the printer to the PC using a long USB cable (it's normally connected only via WiFi). I never turned off WiFi, it was on during the entire update process and it didn't seem to make any difference.

When I clicked the "Start" (or similar) button, the progress bar gradually moved from left to right, and at the end, the display changed and told me the update was successful. The printer never showed any orange lights, at least none that I noticed. At the end of the process, as described in the updater, the printer powered down. Then, as instructed, I disconnected, then reconnected power. The printer came back to life and all was well. At that point, I removed the USB cable, and I was still connected to the printer via WiFi. I did a nozzle check to see the firmware version, and the sheet reported 2.031. I printed one of my photos (via WiFi), and everything worked fine.

A couple of details I remember:

At one point near the beginning of the update process, I'm fairly sure I heard the USB disconnected sound, a few seconds after which I heard the USB connected sound.

After the firmware update (and after I removed the USB cable), I visited the Printers & Scanners control panel. The installer warned that there could be an extra printer in the list after the update, something like "Canon PRO-100 Series Copy 1" (I forget the exact name). The installer advised that this extra printer in the list could (and probably should) be deleted. I did find an extra Printer in the lst and dutifully deleted it. I then successfully used the original "Canon PRO-100 Series" printer for printing a photo from Lightroom (using the Canon Print Studio Pro plug-in).

--Larry

Hello, Canon community members.

For those of you having trouble with the PRO-100 firmware update, if you are using a laptop (such as ducmis' Macbook Pro), make sure it is connected to external power. The USB signal tends to be too weak for the printer when the laptop is running on battery power.

If you are connecting through a USB hub, try connecting directly to the computer.

If your computer is running an antivirus, then you may need to temporarily disable the antivirus, or run the Firmware Updater as an administrator (right-click the file > Run as administrator).

Did this answer your question? In both cases USB was directly connected to computer; no hub.

3. Turned off antivirus - no luck

The updater is executing. I tstates preparing. Then it shifts to starting transfer. In a few seconds the Windows sound for a disconnected devise sound, the yellow light starts blinking three times. Then the error message about a send error appears.

Hi ducmis,

If you are having problems with the updater and the alarm light starts flashing 3 times during the update, you can try uninstalling the printer driver and then installing the latest version of the printer driver from the link provided HERE.

Before installing the drivers, I would suggest going into device and printers by pressing the Windows key and the letter R key at the same time on your keyboard. In the run box that appears, you can type in "control printers" and click OK. In devices and printers check for any icons for the pro-100 and if any appear, you can right click on them and then you can select the option to remove the device. After checking devices and printers for any extra icons, you can start the driver install.

After the driver install, you can try the firmware update again. If the update still fails, I would need some additional information to assist further.

What is the specific error that you get during the firmware update process?

How long is the USB cable and are you connecting to a port directly on the computer?

Did this answer your question? Please click the Accept as Solution button so that others may find the answer as well.

Hello Hector.

I had previously deleted and reinstalled the driver. The only thing I didn't do was look for an icon in Devices & Printers.

So I repeated everything you recommended.

Here is the error message that appears:

USB cable is about 3 feet long.

I can "second" this issue. I have exactly the same problem - cannot upgrade from 1.10 to 2.031.

I always use a USB cable (tried two in case I had a noisy cable).

Tried the update on Windows 10 64-bit (1909) on XPS 15 9530 Laptop - Updater gets to the point of "Transferring data" , printer is blinking orange, hear the windows "connect" noise, but no indication of data transfer. Times out with error.

Tried on 2013 iMac running Catalina 10.14.4. USB cable, virtually the same problem. Printer looks like its ready to receive but nothing transfers.

On the windows side, I also tried to run the Firmware updater in Compatability mode for Windows 7 - no change.

It would be nice to update.

Edit:

@Darius - do you have links to some of the earlier firmware update? I have run across plenty of devices that have warnings and special instructions when trying to make large upgrades. For example, "When upgrading from 1.x to 2.x you must first flash firmware blah blah blah".

Edit:

I also tried to power drain the printer in case some residual charge had a bit in the wrong state (i.e. unplug, press the power button several times, hold the button, plug back in). That sometimes helps PC motherboards, etc., but unfortunately not here. 😞

I'm running Windows 10 pro and yes I have a USB cable connected to the printer.

I'm having the same problem installing the firmware on my pro-10.

Something that I did notice is once I start the upgrade the resume/cancel button starts blinking amber.

Once the error message appears the amber light stops and the printer turns off.

Thanks,

Paul
