Try Handbrake and MPEG Streamclip. Both are free but be sure to download from official sites.

Have many video clips on my Canon Vixia HF10 and want to back them up to my iMac OSX 10.11.6 (El Capitan).

Tried to import them intpo Imac iMovies, but it tells me they are not "movies."

How can I get them on my iMac, so I can sort them, edit or delete them, etc., and save them?

Are the video clips stored on internal memory or an SD card? When the camcorder is connected to the iMac does it show up in finder? If yes, can you access the video folder on the camcorder? If the clips are on an SD card have you tried a card reader?

Thank you for responding. I did manage to get all the videos, both internal and on the card, downloaded onto my Mac. But in all the things Ive been researching and reading, it sounds like I need to get an application to convert the format to .mp4 before I can edit them on iMovie or whatever. would you concur with that?
