Canon vixia hf 40 USB and HDMI question

I have a copule questions.

I noticed a USB connection in the camera. Does it send audio and video to a PC over the USB? If not what is its function?

The HDMI port. Does it send both sound and video over the HDMI port.

I could be mistaken but I believe the USB cable is for transferring files to the computer and not for playback on the computer. You would probably need to use either the Transfer Utility of VideoBrowser to copy/move the video files from the camcorder to the computer. I have never used either so I can't say for sure whether or not you can preview the video files using VideoBrowser. There is more detailed information in the user manual on pages 134 and 135. That manual is for the M40. The user manual for the R40 is here.

The HDMI port will send both the audio and video signal through the HDMI cable.
