EOS R5 C no RAW-Video

Hi!

I am reletively new to Canon and very new to video.

I recently bought a used R5 C and so far I got everything to work just fine. I filmed interviews with it and I used it with MP4 modes. I haven't tried RAW-video because I just had a SD-card.

Now I bought a Pergear CF-Express card from China and tried to record RAW.

I initialized the card and starteds recorddding. The available space on the card was reduced after the recording, but there was no file on the card. I used EOS-Utility and tried the browser. No file. I tried again after initializing the card again, but the result stayed the same. I can record 4k video, but not RAW.

Is my card a fake? (It's supposed to have a write speed of 3400 Mb/s)

Or did I miss anything? I use the LP-E6P batteries.

If I had to guess, the card is likely the issue. Whether counterfeit, poor quality, etc. It's not worth it to go cheap. The camera supports type 2.0 cards you do not need to buy v4.0 cards.

Start here. Since you are new to this camera, and it was previously owned, reset the camera to default settings. Do this in both photo and video modes. Set up from scratch. Do not fear a reset. The more time you spend in the camera menus the quicker you will learn how to use your camera to its fullest potential.

If not already done grab copies of the user guides, both photo and video.

R5 C Support

Use this walkthrough for Cinema OS setup. Note this only applies to video.

Once this is complete go ahead and retest. Personally I might consider returning the CF Express type B card that you purchased and buy one from a reputable manufacturer and dealer. Angelbird, Pro-Grade, SanDisk, Delkin, Lexar, Etc.

What firmware version is your camera using?

I ran 1.1.2.1. for a while and had no issues. It was very stable.

I upgraded to 1.1.3.1 about a week ago. So far routine and stable. You might as well stay where you are for now. Do the settings reset and setup, retest, and if that doesn't help I'd try a different brand card.

I tried again to record RAW now and the files exist on the card. I can watch them in camera, but I can't copy them to my computer. They still do not appear in the EOS Utility. Unfortunately I don't know if the reset was the cause, because I never tried to watch them in camera.

This is really strange.

This is not strange. It is expected. You need a card reader. You cannot transfer RAW or XF-AVC video using the EOS utility.

I wrote a knowledge base article a while ago hopefully this will help you.

Description:
R5 C - Transferring Images and Video Over USB-C To A Computer
The R5 C uses (MTP) Media Transfer Protocol. Depending on the selected mode (Photo or Video), all file types the camera captures can be reviewed or played back on the EVF or LCD. The mode the Camera is set to, Photo or Video affects the file types than can be seen on a computer or transferred.

Solution:
What files can be transferred over USB-C
This depends on the mode.

Photo Mode:
In photo mode, any still photo file type the camera can capture, and .MP4 files can be transferred to a computer via USB-C.

Video Mode:
In video mode, only .JPG and .MP4 can be transferred to a computer via USB-C

(Video Files) Either Mode:
Neither RAW or XF-AVC video files can be transferred via USB-C regardless of the mode (Photo or Video)

What files require a Card Reader:
RAW or XF-AVC video files. You must use a card reader to display and transfer RAW or XF-AVC video files located on storage media.

Navigation:
Windows OS:
Supports browse and copy of files listed above using windows explorer. RAW and XF-AVC files can be copied using an external card reader only.

MAC OS:
Must use Image Capture to view supported files on media card(s)

Notes:
Power consumption is higher when the operate mode is set to Video (Cinema OS). Therefore, you may want to use Photo mode since it supports all still photo file types the camera captures and .MP4 video files. In Video Mode (Cinema OS) you can use the Media Playback button to conserve power. The camera can use USB-C PD while transfers are performed as long as the connection supports adequate power delivery. If not the battery will be depleted while transfers are performed.

It's not ignorance. 🙂 New camera, new environment, you just starting out. I think you're really going to love the camera. It's 4 years old now and is such a wonderful hybrid platform. 45 megapixel still images and 8K video in a small little package. I believe it will continue to impress you. Good luck and enjoy it.

I already do love it, planning to buy a second one soon.

I was a Nikon shooter for the last 15 years. I love my D850 and the Nikon glass, but then I bought a 5D classic, then a 1DS Mark III (all this year) and then I got a very good offer to buy the R5 C. Going to keep the D850 and some glass for portraits, but planning to go full Canon for video.

Agree on the D850. I am not a Nikon guy but that was a great camera. Especially in its day.

In the end it's all just about the glass. There are some Nikon lenses, I will never sell.

The R5 C is not my first mirrorless, but it's the first mirrorless I really love to work with. Just a great camera!
