topic R5C customers are getting no love from Canon. Why? in Professional Video

Canon just released a fairly significant firmware update for the C400, C80, and C50 with no mention of the R5C. The new update added camera controls via USB-C connection. I'm having a hard time understanding why this wasn't pushed to the R5C (which also runs the cinema operating system).

I'm also puzzled as to why we still haven't seen Open Gate recording make it's way to the R5C. It's an 8k sensor and the camera has a CFExpress slot. It seems obvious that Open Gate is possible for this camera, even if it means using a lower resolution or using a compressed codec, etc. I can't see an obvious technical reason why this wouldn't be possible.

I've been a Canon customer for about 15 years and it's been really refreshing to see them finally catch up to the pack and dare I see even lead the way in certain areas when it comes to their cinema line. However, I can't help but feel like the R5C is becoming the red headed step child, missing out on features that it should hypothetically support. Let's not pretend that this wasn't a $4500 camera when it released, so what gives?

Love my R5C, but the lack of "doable" feature updates doesn't exactly inspire confidence about continuing to invest in Canon products. So please, help us out Canon and give us some insight. If these features aren't possible, explain why. If there is a plan or they are being worked on, then any information would be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch.

We are just users so we have no special insight into what Canon does or does not do, or what the future might hold.

To have this seen by the correct people, use the feedback link on the Canon USA web page.

I've submitted several suggestions through the feedback link. Obviously they can't or won't respond to everyone, but the process feels like sending tickets into a massive blackhole. I'd like to believe that somebody reads them and pushes them to the right people but who really knows? I've also seen that Canon staff will occasionally respond to community posts, but I know that's a long shot.

If nothing else, I guess I'm just hoping that with enough input from other users, this could garner some kind of momentum. Thanks!

Greetings ,

I really love the R5 C. It's 4 years old now and firmware was released for it about 6 months ago.

We all purchased the camera with a base feature set and many new features have been added since. Do I wish it could do more. Sure, I wish that about almost every body I have purchased.

Is open gate possible, (probably so) but if you want it you're going to have to buy a C50, C400 R6 mkIII or R6v. Canon usually does this to maintain market segmentation.

The R5 C remains extremely powerful and now 4 years later it's being touted as one of the best hybrid cameras ever (even now). YouTube is laden with "Is the R5 C still worth it in 2026" and the overwhelming consensus is yes. If you shoot in 8k and reframe you can get nearly the same resolution as open gate. I don't think you'll see this feature added but it doesn't hurt to ask. Here's to hoping. 🤞
