topic Disappointed with lack of remote video control on EOS R5 C in Professional Video

Good afternoon!

I would like to share my experience using the Canon R5C, which I purchased about a year ago. Before buying, I reviewed the promotional materials provided by Canon for the R5C. However, there is one issue that deeply disappoints me, and because of it, I cannot recommend this product to people looking for a camera for video shooting. Here’s why:

The advertisement highlights the ability to control the shooting process via a mobile device, which sounds great—but this only works for photos! Seriously?! You develop a product, implement smartphone connectivity, but then remove this feature from the video mode? As a result, I buy a camera for video shooting but can’t use my phone to control it while recording.

When I contacted customer support, they told me I could purchase an additional device for $1,000 to enable this functionality! I decided to return the camera to the store, but the seller convinced me to keep it, suggesting that Canon might eventually release a firmware update enabling phone control for video—after all, the camera already has built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

I want to express my deepest disappointment that your misleading advertising led me to believe this feature was fully supported.

[Additional non-English text removed.]

Greetings,

You aren't alone on this. I've owned the R5 C since its release. Using the native chipset in cinema OS is always something I wanted as well, but I knew going in it wasn't there. I think Canon was very challenged due to the cameras power requirements, but we got an 8k60 camera (that doesn't overheat) before others. I shoot in 4k, but having the ability and knowing that it would turn on (even in the desert) 🥵 was always very satisfying.

Here's a suggestion. You can buy a wireless N3 remote with 2 press trigger. This will start AF and start / stop video. They are cheap too. I know its not ideal, but it will get you going. 😉

Here's another user that created a connectivity guide that's pretty good. He covers the ins and outs.

"Good afternoon!
Thank you so much for trying to help!
The author really nailed my needs and my frustration—
A camera for creating videos solo that doesn’t allow you to control the basic video settings!!! From a smartphone!!! It’s 2025, folks, not 2020. And yet, these features are already available in photo mode!!!!
This feels like a conspiracy by Canon itself against its users.

Yes, I found a used WFT-R10 block for 300 euros on eBay, but after watching this video, I realized that on top of the old problems, I’d gain a couple of new ones.
A huge thanks to the community and the people trying to help—know that you’re the best!

And if by any chance Canon reads this message...)))
PLEASE—just add a firmware update to enable focus, aperture, and ISO control during video recording via smartphone/EVF. 100% of users would be absolutely thrilled.

Wishing everyone the best!"

I just got off with Canon Support. Apparently the WFT-10A grip does not have the same control functionality as the built in WiFi/Bluetooth has in photo mode or with the R5.

Canon Marketing, if you are listening, WAKE UP!!!

I don't know of anyone, perhaps you do, that uses the R5c to shoot in 8K due to the file size.

I suspect that folks that would use 8k would use an actual "C" series camera. BTW, they have wired control capability.

They aren't listening. You need to go to the home page on the Canon USA website and find the teeny tiny (+)Feedback button. That is the official feedback channel.
