EOS R5 C - Problem with responsiveness of Menu

Hello. I bought a new Canon EOS R5 C camera in November 2024 and wanted to update the firmware to v1.0.9.1. When I go into the Menu system setup, Firmware comes up in the list, but there is no information about the firmware already in the camera. Then, when I select Firmware, a list comes up that is all gray - everything is disabled. At the top, it says Camera 1.0.6.1, but it is disabled. I had the camera turned on video when I was doing this. Would anyone be able to help me?

Sorry I missed this post. Please answer the following questions for us.

Do you have any third party accessories connected to the camera?

If you happen to have a lens attached, is it a Canon brand RF mount lens?

The current firmware version on the R5 C is verified in video mode (Cinema OS). The update is performed in video mode. You must use your SD card for the update. Remove your CF Express type B card while the update is performed. For v1.0.9.1 you will copy VSD13.FIR to the root of your SD card.

You will also want to ensure your battery is fully charged. The upgrade takes approximately 9 minutes. You will use the Quick Control dial to make menu selections, and the Set button to select. Please note, do not touch any buttons or camera controls once the FW update has been initiated. The LCD screen will let you know when its complete.

Right -- "Firmware" is the title of the next page. You have to select it to proceed.

Yes, this is normal. The menu items are telling you about your current firmware setup. They are grey because you cant do anything with them -- they are just telling you information. I agree it's not a particularly intuitive way of doing this, but there it is.

You should be able to install the new firmware by following the instructions in the download package. Please note that the package you download from Canon -- either a .DMG file or a .ZIP file -- is a package that you need to unpack on your computer. Inside, you will find instructions, and the actual firmware file, which is a .FIR file. Follow the instructions (carefully) and you should be fine. Rick's advice is also all good.
