AFAICT, it is a focus assist function.

I recently shot an interview where the subject was cropped tightly, a bust shot. Upon playback, the video showed my subject in the bottom right corner about 1/10th the size and the rest of the screen was wide, showing lights, etc.

How could this happen?

I haven't heard of this in a camcorder, but it can happen in a DSLR if you enlarge the viewfinder image without actually zooming.

Thanks, kvbarkley. I'll check to see if I some how inadvertently changed the viewfinder enlargement.
