Going to see what menu options have unlocked now in photo mode. Also received the SaFuel PD.

Greetings,

Anyone else considering? The R5C was not the road I anticipated taking, but I'm tired of waiting and since this body doesn't overheat, I am more confident about it over the standard R5.

Although I am a stills shooter, the Cinema EOS side of the body is intriguing. Its so much smaller than a C70. I'm not serious enough about video that I'd miss Clog2. The body has <STRIKE>16</STRIKE> 14 stops so plenty of DR for my use. Its also not limited to Super35 or 16 (which isn't so much a limitation), but Canon has really stepped up here. I don't care about ibis. All of my lenses except 1 are IS and the body has digital IS built in. I have purchased a bunch of accessories. Control Ring Adapter, 2 512GB CF ExpressB, 2 128GB UHSII, 2x Watson batteries (Canon was out of stock), and I've not tried Manfrotto batteries yet.

Going to try the AngelBird CFExpress cards and ProGrade for the XD Cards. I've always used SanDisk so going to try something else. Both are highly rated.

I also contacted EasyCover in the Netherlands and my contact there has said they do not plan to make a skin for the R5C. Was hoping for this, but am more excited about a new body. Haven't pulled the trigger quite yet. I have a quick business trip and wanted to be back for the arrival. Plan to wait a week. If nothing glaring is reported, I will finally move to mirrorless.

I am a C300 MK III owner/user, and I had pre-ordered an R5c as a companion to the Mk III. There are all kinds of rumors floating about regarding shipment in the USA, but it does appear that they may begin shipping in the US on Monday, April 4th. I certainly hope so, since I had placed an order the first morning that it had become possible, but one never knows.

That said, the only downside I anticipate at this time is the lack of builtin ND filters. Given that its native ISO floats between 800 and 3200 in much the same way that the MK III does, and since I find myself using the MK III's builtin ND's with almost all of my outdoor shooting, I suspect that I will be looking for a collection of screw-in variable ND filters, or in the alternative, Canon's EF-RF adapter with variable ND filter.

While tempting to have a single piece of gear, I still very much prefer having dedicated gear with no compromises. For me, built-in ND filters are a must for my video work. So I will keep my EOS C70 and one day move to a mirrorless photo camera when my 5D IV needs replacing.

Having said that, while I have only used Angelbird's SD offerings (V60 and V90 rated cards), I have had no issues at all and quite impressed by their company.

Having 16 stops has been a complete joy!

Finally, I have not had any time to play around with the new Cinema RAW Lite available on the C70 and R5 C. Was very surprised to be getting RAW video capabilities. Thank you, Canon!

If overheating is what's stopping you from getting an R5 (assuming for video), well, just make sure you're not being put off by too much hype.

On one hand, if you're for example, a wedding videographer who needs to record 1-hour ceremonies, then... overheating won't be an issue, because the record time limit will kick in before it overheats. But certainly the R5 wouldn't be for you.

On the other hand, I've been recording landscape videos, in 4k HQ, with my R5 since July. I generally record a few 15 or 30 minute segments in a session, with some setup time in between. Overheating has never been an issue.

So you might find that an R5 could work for you, and it would save you both money and bulk. The R5 has been fantastic for me, and the detail you get from the 4k HQ picture is awesome. The one BIG pain is the lack of built-in ND filters, so I have to set up an external filter every time. So the R5 is very much my B cam. My A cam is a C70, which is absolutely excellent.

Hello,

Just wondering how you manage with your C70, with just an LCD, out in the bright sunlight shooting landscape? I have tried using the LCD on my C300 MK III in the bright, S Florida sunlit environment and it is useless, to the extent that I have removed it and am now using an EVF-V70 that disallows the simultaneous use of the LCD. Even my Black Magic Video Assist 7" 12G, with a 1,000 nits, presents a challenge. And that is the primary reason that I have chosen, as a 'B' cam, to give the R5c a go ... it has an EVF, albeit, not tilt-able like the EVF-V70, but should be perfectly visible under the stated circumstances. And then there is the fan, which I see as a major benefit for one who shoots in a hot environment.

However, if the C70 had been created with an EVF, or the option to easily install one, it would have been the logical choice for me as a 'B' cam. And I do know that ND filters will be a necessity with the R5c, but I can easily screw in an ND, or variable ND filter on the front of any of my lenses.

Not brilliantly, I'd have to say. It's been OK during the winter, and even today I was out filming snow-clad mountains in the sunshine, and it was do-able. But not great. I have considered an EVF, but for me a nice bright monitor would be good -- I'm shooting a lot of pieces to camera at the mo.

Yes, that had been my experience with LCD use. Even the brightest LCD monitor/recorders present a challenge in sunlight, which is why I opt for an EVF whenever and wherever possible. An alternate solution might be a hood of some kind.

Zacuto makes a bracket for their EVF that slides onto the C70's cold/hot shoe, but then the problem of powering it arises, unless you can find a not too bulky battery that works with the C70 and has a 'd' tap.

Hi Rick,

The camera should have been delivered by 10:30 this morning, but it is now after 1 P.M. and they still have not shown up. Tracking shows that it is on the truck for delivery, but FedEx has not been very reliable this year. Therefore, it will probably be a few days before I will be able to make any worthwhile comments in re the R5c, but I had done my research as well, and I am hoping that it plays nicely with the C300 Mk III's output.

Regards,

Ron

Hi Rick,

The R5c just arrived and I am charging the battery. But my first impression of the camera body is that it is small and very light. The body feels as if it is made of plastic, but that may not be accurate. However, it does have a nice rubbery covering that makes for a good grip. More to follow over the next few days.
As for shipping delays, a lot of preorders had been filled by B&H and Adorama beginning yesterday. I suspect that the later delivery dates are related to those who had placed orders after the cutoff, or days after Jan 19th. But it is definitely the lightest camera that I own, and I have quite a collection. I'm not sure how that will pan out, since I find that heavier cameras are easier to stabilize. But since I shoot with a monopod it may not matter, however, after holding the C300 MK III it feels—weight-wise—downright strange.

Regards,

Ron

You are very lucky. I'm hearing now that shipments might have been paused. Not only in Canada and the AU, but also elsewhere. New release date 5/28? This is unconfirmed, however. Noticed ship dates on the biggest suppliers went from shipping 4/4 to "Coming Soon" and "Back Ordered'. I don't need one until Aug. / latest. Short trip to Hawaii planned in May (6D2 is fine). Bigger trip planned in Sept. but I'd like to have it for a month to be comfortable with it. I've waited so long for something anyway.

Again, I think as a B roll to a 300mkII and both having TC you will be fine. The footage looks great and so did what people are doing with its RAW in post.

@wobbleman99, hopefully yours has slipped through.

Ron,

In one of the videos I watched one of the reviewers mentioned his having to adjust to the camera's lighter weight when using a gimbal. This is just more welcome news to me as I will likely use mine with a black rapids strap. Its actually 5gr lighter than my 6D2, so unnoticeable. I also use a sling style pack which I have found to be both functional and comfortable. While both make you look like a "crazy camera guy" its usually a good "L" lens that tells people you are serious about taking pictures.

I'm sure the reason for the shipping delays will come out shortly. Probably more of a demand than was originally anticipated. All of the preproduction videos and footage were positive overall in comparison to those who didn't like it.

The battery is suppose to charge in 90min. Can't wait to hear about your first shoot. Enjoy it.

Hi Rick,

I hope to do some test shooting tomorrow, if the weather cooperates. Not sure how long it actually took to charge the battery since I put it in a Dolgin dual charger and had left it until I'd remembered that it was charging. The menu system in 'video' mode is almost exactly the same as my C300, and probably the same as your C70. That will make going back and forth a breeze. But I do think that I will have to install the battery grip for balance, since even with the EF 35mm hanging off of the mount I can already feel it tending to tip forward, and the added weight of the battery grip might act as a counterbalance. But that only comes into play if handholding. Once on the monopod, it should make no difference. If the output matches—or exceeds—that of the C300, I will be a happy camper. Since the Canon OEM batteries are currently unavailable, I've ordered a Watson equivalent, until the OEM's begin reappearing. And since all of my current lenses are stabilized EF mounts that I've been using with my C300, I now have the Canon EF-RF adapter with drop-in variable ND filter that should compensate for the in-camera absence of filtration.

I will update you when I have acquired some clips.

Best regards,

Ron

.

Hi Rick,

Sorry for the mixup. I'm still finding my way around the R5c. The video side was an easy setup, given its similarity to my C300 Mk III, the photo side, on the other hand, will require a dive into the manual, as it is not as intuitive as I had anticipated. However, the more I handle it with various EF lenses, the more it becomes apparent that the battery grip will be a necessity and, fortunately, I have one sitting in a sealed box. It reminds me of the time when I had several Sony A7... bodies, and they had all required the battery grip for my hand size. The Canon EF-RF Variable ND filter adapter is a big plus, and is a good reason to not switch to the RF lenses for the R5c, as that would necessitate a more onerous approach to filtering.

I will write more when I have had the time to actually use the camera. I hope to acquire some test clips this afternoon, weather permitting.

Regards,

Ron

Ron,

Agree. The adapter that includes ND is a compelling reason to keep some EF glass on hand. I went with the control ring as this allows programming of certain functions on EF which is native on RF. While I will sell my DLSR body, I like many of my EF lenses enough to keep some of them around for a bit.

I shot a few clips at 4k, 29.97 handheld, with a Canon EF 35mm IS lens, and while color was good, my handholding apparently was not ... clips were not all that sharp, and I've used that lens on my C300 MK III with good results. I will try again tomorrow with my usual monopod setup to prove to myself that the problem is 'me' not the camera.

Greetings,

Since you have a shipping unit, what FW did it come with? Canon rumors said the shipping delay "might" be due to an AF issue in a small number of units. I don't want to be responsible for spreading fake news. I have no idea if there was any validity to this. Not trying to worry anyone. I'm still buying one. Thread below.

Canon Australia halting sales of the Canon EOS R5C | Canon Rumors - Your best source for Canon rumors, leaks and gossip

It appears that one can only check the firmware in video mode, and that, if I recall, is 1.01 but I'll have to check later, as the battery is in the charger and I only have one battery. There had been a notation from Canon that the batch with the AF issue had been shipped to Australia, and that the units shipped to the USA had not been involved. But as an aside, the R5c eats batteries in video mode at 4k.
