The error you are getting is for a motor error in your purge unit. Please reach out to Canon service or your local dealer as this could be needing a purge unit replace.

I started a print last Thursday and after printing about 1 inch. It gave me the EC31-2F1D error.

Per instructions I restarted the printer and during the boot up cleaning procedure it gave me the error again. I found something that said it was an issue with the ink cartridges. I reset them all and no change. Also they are also all genuine canon inks. I checked where the carriage parks and it looks ok.

I sent an email off to canon support but not heard back. Calling maybe an issue since I'm not sure I have a block of time to call. I'm also looking to track down a service tech in the Pittsburgh, PA region. The issue there is I work for a university and we only have a few vendors I can work with.

But one issue that I'm more worried about is when I get the error the carriage is not parking and I think the head is not capped. Can I take it out and seal it up in something till we get this all sorted out or will we need a new head also.

thanks problem is due to the limited number of vendors we have we bought it from B and H. Also, should have added it's out of warranty. 😞

Place I used to work used a local dealer. So local the tech we used could walk to my office. 🙂

Ouch! Best of luck to you. In a pinch, the Purge unit is not complicated to replace. You maybe able to find a YouTube video and order the unit from Canon direct. Call the support line and talk with them about it. I would not order from anyone else as I have seen bad refirbs and aftermarket units. You don't want to go down that rabbit-hole.

weird thing is I see a lot of refences to the EC31-2F1"C" error not the EC31-2F1"D". When I looked up how to replace the purge unit I found a YouTube video, but it was to fix the "C" error.

Proceedure is the same, just the error is slightly different. The C is for a different issue with the purge unit. Just be careful when removing it not to spill the ink. It will dye whatever it comes in contact with. Good luck!
