Cleaning an ipf printhead by wiping the surface easily damages the nozzle plate. These heads are not designed for that.

Also, it sounds like you are running a modified setup (an all black ink system), I am guessing aftermarket inks?

It very well could be the printhead and/or the purge unit both need replacing (going by age of the machine). A quick diagnosis you could do is look at the ink lines going to the carriage. Are there air voids in them (they should be solid with ink)? If so, that is why you are getting the message as ink is not being delivered to the system. If they are solid then the head would be my next item.

i have a canon ipf670 and it has been throwing up a replace printhead error. i have cleaned the printhead just the surface not a flush and the area that receives the discharged black ink and cleaned and reset the waste cartridge. Im running an all black ink system for positives on film. im loathed to just replace the head as ive heard lots of accounts of replacing head and then still getting the same error. has anyone else had this issue and any advice would be gratefully received thanks

thanks for your reply i have looked at the ink lines and they seem solid although it is difficult to tell if there are any air voids i suppose that inevitably running alternative inks will have its issues i was wondering about the purge unit and how complex it is to replace or clean ? it I suppose i want to try everything i can before buying a new printhead thanks again. ..
