Hi

My printer keeps going offline. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer, turned on/off modem and printer. Sometimes it prints and sometimes it says offline and won't print. Why does it keep doing this? It is very unreliable when I need to print things. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for joining the conversation, Sandra!

So that the Community can help you better, we need to know exactly which Canon printer model you have, which operating system is running on your computer (i.e. Windows or macOS, and which version thereof), and whether your computer and your printer talk to each other via Wi-Fi or via a USB cable. That, and any other details you'd like to give will help the Community better understand your issue!

If this is a time-sensitive matter, click HERE search our knowledge base or find additional support options HERE.

Thanks and have a great day!

I’m also having this problem with my G6020. It started after I noticed and complied with the request to do a firmware update about two to three weeks ago. I’ve had nothing but trouble since then. I’ve rebooted everything—printer, devices, router—multiple times. I’ve reloaded drivers on all devices. I’ve attempted set up multiple times. It’s like the printer is invisible to WiFi. I’m running all Apple devices, and most are new—a MacBook Air, two iPhones —a 15 and a 13, and multiple iPads. None will connect and I’m beyond frustrated. I use this for a small business and I have to take the files elsewhere to print things I need for Monday. Prior to this, the printer was wonderful. Then it kept shutting off, which made Airprinting a pain. Then I had to restart the router every time I wanted to print and now it won’t connect via WiFi at all. It really appears as if your update broke something and I really hope you fix it. Otherwise, all I have is a large Canon paperweight.

Hi, I have a canon G6050 that has the same issue, continual disconnection, prints 1 job if I~ get it back the looses all connection.
It is a terrible printer to use! Really bad..

Is there an update on this, I have had advice from canon blaming my wifi having both 2.4ghz and 5ghz. Just about every wifi splits this way, canon connect on 2.4 and say that this is not their problem! Really!

I have the same issue. I use my laptop running Windows 11and connect wirelessly within a few feet of my router. I use my computer every day, sometimes it is powered off overnight and sometime not. Regardless, when I try to print I get an error message that the printer is offline. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the printer, downloaded the current firmware and tried to use the Canon Print app to troubleshoot. This week the Canon Print app - reinstalled 2 days ago - won't even load. This issue is frustrating and unacceptable

I've been dealing with this issue for years on my PIXMA G6020! I've updated my bios, LAN/wifi chipset drivers, printer firmware, disabled sleep mode on the printer, uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers, re-setup the printer through the installer, setup a static IP address, etc. It keeps happening!

At this point, it has to be a faulty wifi controller that you're installing on your printers. What are you going to do to actually address the issue?

Greetings,

I understand you're frustrated, but this topic is now splintered with four or five people replying with different device models and different operating systems. This makes it very difficult to offer solutions. It's also not possible to mark a topic as solved unless it's your own. Your issue deserves its own thread and visibility. This allows community members and Canon Experts to provide relevant solutions specific to your device, problem or issue.

In many cases, network configuration can contribute to intermittent connectivity of devices on your wireless network.

Persistent devices (like printers), that do not "come and go" should be assigned a static or reserved IP on your router. This way the printer (persistent device) always gets the same "destination" IP. This in turn ensures reliable and consistent connectivity. People can visit, devices can connect and leave, but the printer's IP remains constant. This is a common network practice that only needs to be done once. If you need help with this, please start your own thread provide the information I mentioned above and someone here will be happy to assist you. 🙂

Does anyone ever get a satisfactory answer to this problem? How can a printer disconnect in a middle of a print job, on a wireless router and operating system it has been using for many months? And I have done all of the above too.It accepts the wireless password, acts like all is fine, and then it won't connect. how could it work with 5G for months, and then suddenly decide it doesn't want to do that any more? I shouldn't have to be an IT specialist to try to make an expensive printer work (G6020). It told me "your computer is currently connected to a network with a frequency not supported by your printer". well, it has been for months up until now. so it's not an IP address issue, obviously. something changed - mid print job?!?!

Most Canon or other printers will not operate on 5ghz, they need 2.4ghz, and when it has lost its connection and if the message for anyone is that the printer cannot connect to the network because of an unsupported frequency, then most likely the router has dropped the 2.4 or something is interfering with it. It has become more obvious to me a computer company owner and network installer for over 25 years now retired, that it would be a good thing for anyone with a home network to not only learn how to install wireless devices, but how to program and maintain their router as well. I also know that if you can wire your devices as opposed to wireless, you are better off! That being said, once you connect any device wired (ethernet) or wireless, especially a printer, to a DHCP network (the default for all home networks) DO NOT turn the device off. You don't turn your router off or your modem do you? Leave your printer on for the same reason. Turn it off and it many times it will lose its up to that moment network address and its connection to your device.

I appreciate that, but that's asking a lot with all the different routers out there. Also, it still doesn't explain why it lost the connection mid print job. It's not like I shut my computer, or turned it off. My router is also double band 2.5/5.0, so I don't think your explanation is plausible.
