Hi Rick,

I've made the revision and assigned it a static IP; however, the issue still persists. To be clear - the printer itself still shows it's connected to my network via wifi, but none of my devices (iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro, Windows 11 PC, MacOS MacBook) can consistently find the printer. It's as if the printer is totally hidden from all the devices until I power cycle it, then it shows up. Do you have any other ideas on what might be causing this? Thanks!

This happens daily. The only way I have found to fix it is to restart the printer or unplug it then plug it back in. Has anyone found a way to keep it connected? It’s super frustrating to have to constantly walk over and do this before I can print anything.

Greetings,

Are you using a wired or wireless connection?

Do you have a static IP address assigned to the printer?

If you are using DHCP, it's possible your router is reclaiming the IP address of the printer after some period of inactivity. This is often why power cycling the printer restores the connection.

Greetings,

A router or DHCP server is responsible for managing IP addresses on your network. This service maintains a pool of addresses it assigns to devices when they request a connection. IP addresses are leased for a set period of time, unless you reserve or assign a static IP to a device. Many devices come and go. Devices like a printer are persistent. These devices benefit from getting an assigned "static" IP address.

Address reservation or static IP assignment is done on your router. This process basically tells the router to assign the same IP address to a known device. It's typically identified by its MAC address. A MAC address is a unique hardware. Identifier embedded on a network device during the manufacturing process.

The DHCP server on your router will periodically check in with connected devices to see if they are still on the network. If the router doesn't get a response, it reclaims the assigned IP for future use. However, if the device has been turned off for a long period of time or is gone to sleep, It may not get the same IP address when it wakes up or gets turned back on. Now when you try to print your computer attempts to send the job to the last known destination. In many cases the IP address has now changed. The print job fails or the printer shows as offline.

By assigning a static IP, your printer will always get the same IP address. You then install the device as an IP printer on your computer. Now when you print the job is sent to the static IP or "destination" that never changes. This ensures persistency and that any device (computer, mobile device, tablet) will always be able to find the printer at its assigned destination IP.

Try connecting to your network by Ethernet CABLE instead of WiFi. The printer has the capability.

I have a printer that has USB and WiFi only. I first set it up to use WiFi. It had a nasty habit of losing its network connection even though I was using a Static IP address. Had to restart/reboot it for it to reconnect. I finally got tired of it and changed over to USB. No problems since, except it is no longer networked.

Greetings,

So you have assigned the printer a static IP address on your router and confirmed the printer is using this IP address?

Please open a command prompt on your computer and ping the IP address you've assigned to the printer. Does it reply?

Are you able to open a web browser, input the IP address into the address bar, and does the printer's remote UI/ web server login display?

What is the brand and model of your network equipment? Who is the ISP?

Scroll to the right on the printer's LCD and check for firmware updates please. The printer must be connected to the network and have access to Internet for the update check.

I don't expect you to use a USB connection since this completely defeats the purpose of owning a network device and limits the ability of other network devices to utilize the printer.

Using ethernet should not be necessary. The only exception would be if the printer was outside of the broadcast range of your wireless network.

OK, so I set the printer to have a static IP address and it seemed to improve performance; however, I'm still not seeing the consistency and functionality that I would expect. I'm also unsure now if this is truly a network issue or if it's tied to some of the other posts that comment on their imageCLASS not waking up from sleep mode consistently when a print job is sent (see HERE and HERE as examples).

When the printer is in sleep mode, 90% of the time it does not show up in the available printers on my MacBook Pro M4. If it does show up and I select it, it will rarely send the print job as it shows the printer is offline (hence my initial thought it was a network error). If I walk over to the printer and wake it up from sleep mode, it will show up in the MBP printer list and within a minute or two the print job will start.

Any other suggestions?

I have a very similar issue and have a few things to add:

Sending a continuous ping to the printer will keep it from going off network. Pinging it after going off network does not wake it or get a response.

Unplugging the ethernet cable and Replugging will wake the network.

Power cycle will wake the network

Details for those who need them:

Canon imageCLASS MF733Cdw

Unifi network

Static IP

Wired Ethernet (Wi-Fi off)

Firmware is up to date

I have disabled or extended every option for sleep or low power that I can find

Printer control panel is responsive but I have not found anything that wakes the network from the panel

One last step you may want to try now that you've assigned a static IP to the printer on your router.

Open up the printers and scanners applet on your Mac. Select the printer and remove it using the minus key (-). Important restart your computer.

Now go back to the printers and scanners applet and install the printer as an IP printer.

Click the globe icon which is just to the right of the add printer icon. This will prompt you for the IP address you've assigned to the printer. When you enter the IP address, you'll notice the field two down will also populate with the same address. This field is editable, so give your printer a friendly name. Like "MF753 CDW"

Ensure you select the Canon driver in the use driver box down below. Now save to add.

Please test this configuration and see if it helps.

Great. This is the configuration I use on all of my PC's, Mac's and printers. By assigning a static IP to the printer on the router, it ensures it will never give that IP address to another device on the network regardless of when the printer was last seen, turned on, used, etc.

Similarly, installing the printer as a TCP IP device on your computer means it will not have to rely on DNS, bonjour or hostname lookup to resolve the printer's name to its IP.

The brand and model of your networking equipment also plays a role here. Some consumer networking gear doesn't do this as good or as well as other networking equipment.

Last of course is the network adapter in the device. Over the years I have seen a higher number of issues with the NICs in the MF 751 and 753 devices. Failing to wake, etc.

I'm hopeful however that the changes you've made are going to work for you.

Unfortunately, the issue has returned, though now it's also not printing from any device - mobile, Mac, or PC. It's showing that it's connected to the network with the same static IP I previously assigned it, and I can confirm that I can access it directly via my web browser using that IP address. However, it simply will not print or acknowledge that I'm sending a print job to it. I've tried power cycling it multiple times, since that seemed to have done the trick before, and I even removed/readded it to my PC using the IP address. I'm about done with this rather expensive paperweight.
