I just bought an Azuz Zenbook with Snapdragon. When I try to install the Cannon Utilities drivers that enables me to use my laptop for directing my scanning operations o my printer I get a message that the program is not supported by this computer.

Greetings,

Your Asus Zenbook Is ARM based and may not be compatible with software applications intended for Intel or AMD based systems. Microsoft started putting ARM-based processors in their surface laptops and Asus, Lenovo, HP and others have started to follow suit. The problem however, is there is still a lot of software applications and hardware out there that is only compatible / written for Intel or AMD based systems. Canon has not released ARM-based drivers for its consumer printers yet. I believe they are coming but there is no ETA yet.

I would take a quick look at all of the software applications and hardware you plan on using your computer with as you may find, other hardware and software has compatibility issues as well. Sticking with an Intel based system is your safest bet.

Windows 11 does have native printer support, but these are not full feature drivers.

What printer model do you own?

The installation software which came with the TR4720 gets as far as the installation phase (after setup of the printer). Then it replies that that installation program does not recognize the Snapdragon OS (Windows 11) or the browser being used. I tried both Chrome and Edge.

I tried downloading the suggested Canon drivers for both the MX492 (the old printer) and TR4720 (the new printer) and neither will install either by USB plug in or by manually adding the drivers. While the driver .exe ran, the printer (which does show up via wifi with a device name and number... also shows correct details in the driver information panel) will not install that driver in the /settings/printer windows install.

If there is a Snapdragon Windows 11 for ASUS Zenbook compatible driver somewhere I would be willing to give it another go. But this is extremely frustrating and I am (by web search) hardly the only person to suffer this problem. Canon needs to provide a guide on how to add a working driver.

I have the same problem. After using a desktop with Windows 7 for about 13 years I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy laptop running Windows 11. It uses a Snapdragon processor. I also bought a new Canon printer/scanner TR4755i because it has Wifi connection which my existing Canon printer doesn't.

I couldn't get it to connect to WiFi but the UK support desk sorted that ut using a WPS button, but now I want the scanner software. I'm used to Canon's IJ software but it is incompatible with my computer. I've spoken to the support desk again and they say that they've known about this problem for over a year and there may not be a fix.

Not being technically minded I can't see why the make of processor should make a difference or why a company like Canon can/t sort this out. The man did suggest using third party software called Vue Scan if they can't fix it.

Just had to spend $20 for phone technical support to be told Canon drivers do not support Snapdragon processors and they don't know if they will in the future. Told them they should put that information on the product support pages for their products. So being forced to use the Windows 11 drivers basically dumb down the Canon scanning products. Highest resolution I can get from those drivers are 600 dpi.

Greetings,

Since I don't have a snapdragon system to test this on I can't verify, but see if you can (edit) type in a higher resolution in the field. Canon's ScanGear allows this. Supported Optical resolution can be selected with a drop-down, interpolated resolutions can be typed in manually. I realize you don't have that but give it a try anyway. If you are able to do that please let us know.

Absolutely crazy. Canon should make it clear in their product descriptions that their printers are not suitable for computers using Snapdragon and/ or ARM processors. Fortunately, VueScan is working well.

Greetings,

Congrats. Happy you could do that. What is a shame though, are the number of folks who have adopted ARM without fully understanding what it means from a software, applications and peripheral device compatibility standpoint. Microsoft pushed it in their surface devices, and others jumped on board. Apple silicon is based on ARM, but they did it much better from an implementation standpoint. I like Windows (it's my primary OS) but MS really blew it and has done the industry a real disservice with their surface book implementation (based on ARM) and windows. That's why companies like Lenovo, HP, Asus, and others still sell Intel and AMD based devices.

ARM has been around for a long time, but it wasn't being used in mainstream devices like laptops previously. The tide is turning. I'd still buy Intel or AMD before ARM given a choice.

Interesting as my new laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3. Returning is for a non-Snapdragon model is not an option now and had no idea about this issue given I did research prior and even consulted my trusted IT person (I was wavering between staying with a HP or going to Lenovo). Rick, what is the issue with coding ARM drivers? Is it a licensing issue (I doubt that as Apple is notorious for being difficult to license - worked for the law firm that represented them and took them public) or some other issue that is creating the issues you state above? Just want to be clear why and what my future expectations should be given I cannot return my new laptop. My work around right now is I had given my husband a laptop that he rarely uses that is a HP and I'm just installing all the Windows 10 apps for my multi-function Canon so I can at least do what I used to before my new laptop.

And thank you for all your knowledge on this.
