AirPrint is kind of basic. It does what it's supposed to do - print.

For everything else (including scanning), you need to use the Canon Print app. Snag it at https://canon.us/PrintApp

It integrates into your share sheet and everything.

Hi there!

Recently switched from HP to Canon because I love the print quality HOWEVER - I’ve yet been able to print from my smartphone without serious issues every single time.

AirPrint is basic and you can’t change the paper settings. I can live with that if I could print from the Canon PRINT app. However, I can’t print from the app. I get an error message that it “Failed to communicate”.

wi-fi is connected - same on printer and phone

smartphone connect is enabled on printer

i have reset all devices - phone, router, printer

Hello, mw9, and welcome to the Canon Community!

How frustrating! I've had it happen to me so many times, so I can 100% relate, but the good news is (from what I can see in these screenshots), the fix is super easy!

AirPrint relies on WiFi. Your devices must be on the same WiFi network for AirPrint to communicate. If you turn your Phone's WiFi on, it should work. If it doesn't, give our support team a call at 1-800-OK-CANON (800-652-2666) Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.

Hi Stephen, thank you, that’s a good note!

This screenshot was actually taken as I was attempting to try by connecting to the printer vs my home network - see attached. Tried both ways and no dice, however - the printer will connect then say “no network connection” - but not sure if this means something is wrong there.

I can print via AirPrint, and I’m fine if printing documents, but AirPrint just doesn’t want to allow me to switch the paper size from Letter to 4x6 to print a photo. Apple Customer Service wasn’t able to help - they just kept sending steps on how to print something. I guess it’s just an automatic setting that I can’t change? Not sure.

While it’s super annoying to be unable to switch paper size in AirPrint, I would be fine to know that I have to switch to the Canon PRINT app when I want to print photos and utilize AirPrint for docs. However, that’s where the issue lies. AirPrint works but I can’t change the paper size. PRINT app doesn’t work at all.

Hi mw9,

Is there a reason why you're not connecting your printer to your wireless network? Wi-Fi direct is great in situations where a wireless network is not available, but if you have one, there is no reason not to connect the printer to it. This a way any device connecting to the home network can use the printer. The reason why the direct connection to the printer says no internet is because the printer doesn't provide an internet connection. It's acting as a host and your Mobile device is connecting to it directly. Connect your printer to the router "spectrumsetup-EB and connect your phone to the same home network and you should be able to print and scan. if this doesn't work, please log into your router. Look at the list of attached devices and verify that the printer is in fact connected and has an IP address assigned.

I feel so technologically challenged with this 😩

So I was connected to both WiFi and the Wireless Direct on the printer, thinking it was needed to print from my phone.

I disabled the wireless direct but it didn’t change things. I deleted and reinstalled the app afterward and it FINALLY WORKED!

My goodness, no words to express how appreciative I am; this has been so annoying!

Thank you so much!
