Hi, wes1019,

Not sure who you spoke with but it sure doesn't sound like anyone from Canon, and we're glad you turned them down and disconnected before they had a chance to scam you any further. We have no way here at Canon to renew anything to do with Microsoft certificates, and this was most likely some third party website trying to pass themselves off as official representatives. If this happened earlier today, it definitely wasn't any official Canon representative, as we are closed on weekends.

In the future, to avoid issues such as this one, please only contact official Canon resources. Our friendly printer tech support team is available Mon-Fri: at: 1-800-652-2666. And be sure to register your printer on My Canon Account to access all other available support options here: http://canon.us/account

Thanks for reporting this and for your vigilance!

Scammed while looking for PIXMA G3270 drivers

C0000022 Error scam

I spent time on the phone with Canon Tech Support. After looking through a bunch of different settings and drivers he told me that the problem was with my computer and that the printer was fine. He then explained that some Microsoft drivers were stopped that were vital to run the printer. He said that he could renew the Microsoft certificate for $99 for a two year certificate or $289 lifetime. I declined. He had a punch of windows open and as soon as I told him no he started closing them. When I realized he was doing that I picked up my phone and tried to get a shot of the windows. I caught the last window he closed. After this i did a search and found the drivers for my printer (g3270) and got it installed and printing. I find this to be a very poor experience. I’m very disappointed with Canon right now.

I went to the website that is on the instructions with the printer. It took me the install page. When it failed I used the chat to try to get help. The AI chat bot told me that someone from tech support would call me. Shortly someone who called himself Sam called me.

Greetings,

@wes1019

I want to be 100% clear so you understand exactly what happened here. You did not speak to Canon. You were scammed. While you might believe you followed the instructions and visited a legitimate site, You didn't. If you allowed or granted these scammers (essentially criminals) any type of remote access to your system, you might be at risk of identity theft or other compromise. If credit card or financial information was provided, you need to notify your financial institution.

If these individuals were on your system, I suggest you have it checked by someone with forensic IT experience to ensure you are not compromised or vulnerable. I'm sure you believed you were doing the right thing. However, it was not Canon you were interacting with. Very sorry this happened to you.

Hello!

This is frustrating and confusing, I know.

The card/sheet that comes with the printer instructs you to visit https://ij.start.canon

That URL ends in (dot)canon, not (dot)com. It's also important to note that Canon is spelled with a single letter "n" in the middle, "Canon," not "Cannon." You could have easily landed on a scammer's site if you entered an incorrect URL or searched for the site. I've created a shortcut specifically for your printer: https://canon.us/G3270setup

Technical support with Canon USA is inbound only - our team will not call you. If you're out of warranty and require phone support, the most we ever charge is $19 per issue (not call).
