Fix For MF Scan Utility Failures Windows 11 24H2

I have been frustrated by this issue also. I bought a new desktop machine and it immediately updated and installed Win11 24H2 on it. I then installed my Canon software for my printer MF750C and the MF Scan Utility would fail with the message mentioned many times in this thread.

I have installed all the latest updates and including the one Microsoft released 12/10/2024, KB5048667, but none of that made the scanner software work.

Now today I reinstalled just the drivers for the MF750C under the Imaging devices in Device Manager, and it started working, and has kept working as I think I have tested after rebooting at least 10 times today.

So bring up Device Manager, (right click on the Start Menu), expand Imaging devices, then right click your device, mine says Canon MF750C Series, (2 times). Now this part is important as I checked it twice and if you don't Disable the device first it doesn't seem to work right. So right click on the device and click Disable Device. My MF750C is listed twice here in Imaging devices, so be sure to Disable Device for both of them. Then right click on it again and select Browse my computer for drivers, then select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Your printer/scanner should be in the list, make sure it is selected, then click Next.

Mine then came back and said Windows has successfully updated your drivers. Make sure you do this for BOTH of the devices listed there, at least if it lists two of them. Windows does say it updated the device driver. I'm not sure what it did for sure but it did something.

It doesn't say you have to, but I then rebooted my machine before I tried the software, but then the MF Scan Utility works! It has kept working for 2 days now, and after many reboots!

I don't know if this will work for everyone but so far it has worked for me. I have no ideas what made it work today. Microsoft and Canon, (and apparently HP and Brother), need to talk and get this resolved for people!

Merry Christmas!

Hello Dale and shadowsports,

Hoorah, joy in the house!

Worked! I tried browsing to the folders and drivers that I previously downloaded, so in my haste did not manage to determine which driver was the one that made my Imageclass MF242DW canner and Scansoft app start working again, but it is now working!

This is a screen shot of the driver properties from the device manager > imaging devices > right click on my printer/scanner and then selecting properties.

REBOOTED, and checked the scan app and it worked!

Thank you!

Happy Holiday!

Aloha!

This device disable and driver reinstall did not work for me. I installed W11 24H2 yesterday (dumb idea) and this morning I noticed that Canon Scan Utility stopped connecting to my MF720C multi-device. I have an Ethernet connection to my network with fixed IP address (probably does not matter). I tried reinstalling the scan utility (same version I already had) and that did not help. I activated W11 Windows Fax and Scan app and I CAN connect to the scanner that way. Feeder works with the MS App. The App will not print a PDF on initial scan, but I can use the App's Print function to create a PDF. So, I will wait to see what kind of fix becomes available.

Thanks for the tip, it seems like it may have brought me closer, but still having issues. Using the DR-C125 scanner on a new PC that was preloaded with Windows 11 24H2, so rollback is not an option. The device manager did not recognize the scanner as an Imaging device until after I ran the suggested sequence and ran the original setup to get the drivers loaded to the PC. Now the device finally shows in the Device Manager as an Imaging Device, but still does not show as connected in COT or the Windows Scan Utility. Ran the RegistryFix from Canon, says no problem, retried the driver update and it says it's the best driver available. Anyone find a next step for this that might be needed? Did reboot each time, thanks!

I was tired of the Scan Utility not working as I need to quickly create PDF files from the scanner. Using the MS Scan and Fax utility is very cumbersome as you are creating a separate file for each page of the document. So, I just now rolled back from 24H2 to 23H2 and the Scan Utility started working again, exactly as before. You only have a 10 day period to do this and I was on the 8th day, so I gave it a shot. I will not be upgrading to 24H2 until this particular mess is solved by MS. I read that the driver that is the culprit is affecting other scanner due to a eSCL bug. I am getting more and more tired of MS products, including Windows. They are constantly throwing products and features at me that I neither want nor need. I want a lot more simplicity and reliability. If I wanted a cell phone for doing my more complex tasks, I would use it. I do not want that. I really do not think this is Canon's fault. But this eSCL bug has been going on for some months with no solution. Canon should be alerting its customers who have registered affected products.

This issue is sometimes describe relating to USB connections involving the eSCL driver. Multi-functional devices are also called out as having problems. My Canon multi-device can run as a USB device, but I have mine configured as an Ethernet network connected device, so I don't quite understand why the discussion has sometimes been characterized only as a USB problem. I suspect that very large number of users having this problem connect their device to a network rather than an individual PC. For example, MS described the problem as follows, which seems erroneous to me:

"After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might experience issues discovering USB connected devices that support the eSCL (eScanner Communication Language) scan protocol. You might observe that your device does not discover the USB connected peripheral and the device discovery does not complete. This issue primarily affects USB-connected multifunction devices or standalone scanners that support scan functionality and the eSCL protocol." https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-24H2#3446msgdesc

On December 10, MS described this problem as resolved by KB5048667, which was obviously completely wrong. It is over 3 weeks since that release and still no solution.

Update: Did get the solution to work on one of the two devices with the issue, additional step needed on the one that did work was to exit the Canon COT software first. Thanks again!

As TJ_at_TTA mentioned above, I would try to reboot, and do not try to print or scan, also make sure none of that Canon software has loaded at startup. If it has you might try to terminate it. Then try the procedure to reload those drivers. It could be some software has the drivers loaded so they are in use and cannot be updated.

Hope that works for you.
