I have the MF-455DW printer/scanner. I have installed the drivers and the MF Scan Utility and am connected via WIFI. The printer works fine, however, when scanning either from the printer or from the Scan Utility, I get the error box: ScanGear MF: Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off. Check the scanner status and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated. Note that I get the same error on the computer in either case - initiating from the computer or the printer.

Can anyone please provide some help?

I just had to do a Clean Install of Windows 11 and found too that the MF Scan Utility would not communicate with my MF726Cdw. I even installed (and left it in place) the Windows 10 (x64) [Windows 32-bit & 64-bit] Patch for Network Scan, USB Scan. Still no luck.

During my Windows 11 re-install, updates also were installed: 2024-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5048667) and 2024-11 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 24H2 for x64 (KB5045934).

Still had issues UNTIL...

An optional Windows update was also posted: 2024-11 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 24H2 for x64 (KB5048162) was installed today and voila!! MF Scan Utility now communicates with my MF726Cdw!! It looks like Microsoft fixed something.

Sorry, I have not resolved this yet. I now use a scanning program from Windows called Scan.

I find it very "interesting" and a bit concerning that Canon has left this issue unresolved. This forum appears to be unmonitored by folks that should be able to solve these issues. You would think they would want their users to sing their praises rather than chat among ourselves to find a solution to their issue.

Good luck.

Greetings,

A workaround for this issue MF Scan Utility Communication Failure when running windows 11 24H2 was posted by user Dale1973. I tested the solution in my own environment and it worked.

It was originally posted in the Microsoft Community and others there also confirmed it as working. It involves disabling the entry or entries for the printer under Imaging Devices in Device Manager, then manually forcing an update on those devices using right-click, then restarting.

Several users here have also responded with a positive outcome.

Hi

I purchased a MF751CDW yesterday and had the exact same problem. It replaced a MF451 which was working perfectly fine for two years. The solution was to download and run the total driver package from 2023 that is 286.85 MB. It is listed as [Windows 64bit] MF753Cdw/ MF751Cdw MFDrivers (Generic Plus UFR II / Generic FAX / ScanGear). Run that program and allow it to do the installation. You can still download the updated driver on top of that but the 2025 (v300 or 312) driver-only download doesn't have the installation feature. Don't ask me what the difference is.

I checked for your MF 455, and it looks like that total driver installation package is from 4.26.22 at 271.61 MB. It is called [Windows 64bit] MF455dw MFDrivers (Generic Plus UFR II / Generic Plus PCL6 / Generic Plus PS3 / Generic FAX / ScanGear). You can filter the download type at the top by drivers. I would say to try to download and run that. You can remove the prior installation of the printer if you want to before so it doesn't make a copy.

I tried the Dale 1973 method mentioned and it didn't work.

Good luck.

Weirdly, I managed to get mine (mf232w) to work by plugging in my latop via a USB cable, and then disabling my laptop's wifi. I'm guessing that the software isn't doing a good job distinguishing between the connected wifi / network version of the printer / scanner, and the USB version.

I want to thank all of you for your suggestions and support. In particular, snuf1029. After reading this post, I utilized a Cisco (Linksys) WUMC710 Wireless Media Connector to connect my printer/scanner to my network. I changed to the connection to wired/ethernet and used the Media Connector to connect to WIFI. This worked. I deleted and reinstalled the drivers and got the system to print and scan.

Snuf1029, your conclusion that the software "isn't doing a good job distinguishing between the connected wifi and network version of the printer/scanner and the USB version" got me going down that path. THANK YOU.

To Canon: Why can't you fix this? This is not a Windows issue, it is a driver issue. Now maybe that some Windows installations work and others do not, but that does not mean this is not your issue. Fix it please!
