Hello dmlarsen.

The WPS button is not on the printer. This button would be located on your router itself.

If your router does not have a clearly marked 'WPS' button, please use the CD with your computer to perform the standard wireless installation.

This didn't answer your question or issue?

I have also just bought a Canon printer and have spent a long time looking for the WPS button on the printer. This is mosts confusing. Maybe Canon needs to re-think the wording of the instructions. Also, a hint as to how to engage the numbers on the keypad would lbe helpful.

I just had the same problem figuring out what a WPS button was and where to find it...it took me 20 minutes of googling online, and looking through all my canon documentation...finally found answer on google, then had to unplug the printer and move it close enough to the router (located in another room) to "press and hold" the button on the top of my router while pressing "ok" on the printer. Now I am afraid to unplug the printer and move it back to my desk because it will probably not recognise the WPS router anymore.

Very confusing I agree. Does anyone know if I can now unplug the printer and move it back to where I want it?

Your answer as to where the WPS button solved a question that I otherwise would have to wait until Monday when the tech# is available here in Canada (Monday thru Friday) Yes, why is this not better explained in the instructions. As all the other instructions were so easy. This really held me up. So glad I found the answer here. 🙂

Wait. This is crazy.

Short cut: Yes...there IS a workaround ON our Pixma MX922 Canon printer: Look top-rightmost corner and there is the reddish, "STOP" glowing icon of a secret weapon you and I need.

Now for the rant for you, Canon, wasting all our time and your own. This printer deserves better than the nutso humans who wrote these instructions. You seriously also ought to consider the type of people Apple uses for User Interface Design of your hardware. Really!

There is a much simpler alternative to pressing this non-existent (for most of us) WPS button...and all the rest.

I'm a 74 yr old, non-technical lady who is without my Canon MX922 CD due to the box it is still with being in storage following a recent relocation. For no good reason, though I could print to this Pixma MX922 with my iPad as well as my iPhone, as of starting only 2 days back, it was daily "dropping" my wifi connection with my MacBook.

Because I did not have the recommended CD, could not find a downloadable option to replace that for 2 days, could not find a WPS button on the printer nor on my Apple router nor on my Time Warner "box" I was having to RE-ROUTE all files to print to either my iPhone or iPad.

Crazy!

So...here's the secret weapon of the ON THE PRINTER alternative to the WPS button...sitting there all along. Look on the bottom-right readout of the printer instructing you to "hold the WPS button" which you dance that jig to then press "OK" on the printer...ideally, humming Dixie for good luck, wearing your 4-leaf clover.

Skip ALL the above. Instead...look at that crazy little reddish-orange-ish symble near that set of directions on the Printer window - looks like a circular, marked-through crisis or STOP Sign in a way. Now...loop to the upper right hand corner of the printer itself: find that matchup of that little graphic image - it is marked STOP.

Duh! Canon, oh Canon...what on earth is wrong with you in terms of writing instructions...and posting them clearly everywhere related? Please hire either an instructional designer tech writer with a tiny bit of illustration talent; ...or even one of those underpaid 1st-2nd-3rd-4th grade "saints" we call dedicated elementary school teachers. Let THEM wrtiting your step1-step2- illustrated directions and do us ALL a huge favor and save yourself millions in live tech support.

Pleaseee!

Short ending to a long story: Press that STOP button which IS clearly marked as described -- uppermost-right top corner...and Viola! Like MAGIC...it will change the direction in the Canon Pixma MX922 window and bring right up: ALL the wifi potential connections in the vicinity of this printer. Like magic...there your own will be IF you are successfully wifi-connected generally.

Select your own...then interpret Canon's truly non-helpful means of choosing your alpha-numeric-caps-small-case options to punch it iright BELOW your wifi "name." THEN...press OK.

Magic again...if your wifi is working, if you selected your correct wifi name you have password access to, if you entered that correction...YOU WILL be advised "connection" successful or some similar ear-music venacular.

Canon...come on! Please join us in the year 2014 (and also 2013) with a simpler solution than this coded, mysterious, inconvenient, unnecessary approach to getting this really nifty airprint device to PRINT.

Sorry for the rant. How on earth does this company continue to succeed with this little common sense?

Hopefully, this at least gives the rest of you trusting this company to get a printer to do the job it really does seem to me it is TRYING to do if its' humans will get out of the way.

When you press the Wireless setup button on the printer consol, it tells you to go press the WPS button on the device. It doesn't explain what the device is, but I am pretty sure they mean to press the WPS button on the wireless router. I have worked on a lot of wireless routers and have only seen one wireless router with a WPS button.

We have a new macbook pro. There is no CD slot on the new MBP. We have the Pixma mg5420 printer. Brand new Jan 21, 2014.

What I did instead (and this worked !!!).

On the Printer do the following:

1) Press the home button on the printer, or whatever button it takes to see the Wireless setup button. Press the wirelss setup button on the printer (on mine it was the lower left button under the consol screen on the mg5420 pixma printer). The wireless setup button has the typical icon for wireless, curved lines in the shape of a piece of pie. Looks like a radar gun from a cartoon.

2) Printer will say searching

3) wait 10 seconds or so

4) press the STOP button on the printer.

5) you will see an advanced button. Select advanced and press the OK button.

6) hopefull it will now find your wireless routers name and should find all your neighbors wireless routers too.

7) select that router and press OK button on printer.

😎 It will ask you to select the security used on this wireless router. If you don't know just start trying them. Ours was WPA2 personal (AES). Press OK after selecting the security type.

9) when you select the correct security it will ask you to enter the password on the next screen. So enter the password you normally use to connect to your wireless router.
10) Press OK, when done and follow the prompts to get out.

I did the above from memory, so might be a bit off, but still better than what Canon supplied.

Back on the computer

1) If you haven't already, go to www.canon.com and download the correct drivers for your pixma printer and your OS and install.

2) Print a test page.

The 'button' is on the wireless router. The button on my d-link looks like 2 arrows going around.

These are the WORST instructions I've ever seen. First, clarity on where it is, secondly hold for 5 sec and press OK, but let go or keep pressing? Anyway, it worked by pressing continually while it said connecting and finally I let go and it connected.

Your router must be WPA enabled. You might have to go into the router software and set it up first. To open your router software, at start type cmd, then ipconfig. The Defualt Gateway address is the router address. Type that IP address into the address field on your browser.

You can google your router to find the instructions on enabling WPA, some wireless routers cannot support WPA.

This printer is cheap and a fax so I bought it, but it's the worst for clarity. I"m a computer person and I can get the fax going etc.... Maybe stick to HP next time....

The install CD does not give me any option other than to use the WPS button....or install it via the traditional "wire" method...I DO NOT HAVE A WPS button....!!!They keep telling me to go back to the install CD and use the aternate install method....The only alternate install method I can find is by useing the USB cable..!!

Here is what I did. Took me over an hour to figure this out, I got stuck looking for that WPS button also. Many new laptops do not have a CD drive to make them thinner and lighter and cheaper, my new Macbook pro does not have a CD so I downloaded the driver from www.canon.com. You don't need the CD and you don't need the WPS button if you do the following:

On your computer do this.

go to www.canon.com | click Support | click the region of the world you live in, if you are in the USA click here http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support | on this page you will see a small search bar with a magnefying glass next to it. type the name and model of your printer into the search bar near the top of the web page. I typed in "pixma" for a list of all the pixma's | click search button | you will see a list of printers, find your printer | under the printer listing on this web page - click driver & software | It will probably autodetect your operating system, if not select your OS | click the driver you want and download and install the driver. You have to have a driver on each computer for the printer to work.

Now go to your Canon printer and do the following. Some printers might be a little different, but they all should have the capability to connect manually to the wireless router, if they are a wireless printer.

1) On the front of the printer, press the home button, or whatever button takes you to the Wireless setup button | Press the wireless setup button on the printer (on mine it was the lower left button under the consol screen on the mg5420 pixma printer). The wireless setup button has the typical icon for wireless, curved lines in the shape of a piece of pie. Looks like a radar gun from a cartoon.

2) Printer will say searching

3) wait 10 seconds

4) press the STOP button on the printer. <-- this is the important part on my printer there was a STOP button. You have to press the STOP button to get to the advanced menu.

5) you will see an advanced button. Select advanced and press the OK button.

6) it will now find your wireless routers name and probably will find all your neighbors wireless routers too. If it doesn't show up in the list, then power cycle your wireless router off wait 3 seconds and power it on, then start from step 1 again.

7) select your wireless router name ( also called the SSID) and press OK button on printer.

😎 It will ask you to select the security used on this wireless router. If you don't know just start trying them till you get one that works. Ours was WPA2 personal (AES). Press OK after selecting the security type.

9) when you select the correct security it will ask you to enter the password on the next screen. enter the password you normally use to connect to your wireless router.
10) Press OK, when done and follow the prompts to get out.

11) your printer is now connected to the wireless router (with no wire)

I did the above from memory, so might be just a bit off

Back on the computer:

1) If you haven't already, go to www.canon.com and download the correct drivers for your pixma printer and your OS and install. (See above)

2) Print a test page.

3) If it prints | do a happy dance | if not try again, you maybe missed something | if you spend over an hour then something else is wrong, maybe the wireless router needs to be factory reset but don't do that unless you know how to setup the wireless router.

I think Canon was trying to make life simple with the WPS button, not realizing that some routers to not have one.
