canon sx 280 does not beep twice when the shutter button is pressed half way after focusing. can anyone tell me why or how to correct. thanks

Things to check:

!. Camera might be muted, 2. Shutter volume could be turned off, 3. Shooting mode might automatically shut off sounds (ie.: quiet mode, museum mode)

Check the manual on page 149 for how to check the sounds. Here's a link to the Canon web site for the manual if you don't have one:
