Software won't recognize SX50

I have a Powershot SX50 HD and the software doesn't recognize my camera ... says camera not found. I am running on a Mac Mini with the latest OS Mavericks.

The SX50HS is compatible with Maverck V10.9...using the Image Browser software for Mac from the Canon website. As you installed the software it will tell you to connect the camera..at which point the camera must be off when you connect the usb cable and then you turned on ?

I had come to that conclusion as well, and thought I should try to reinstall the software, and will as soon as I can find the original software disk. In the meantime, I bought a universal card reader for $12, and plugged it into my computer. It works great, and brings the pictures up in the Canon software. The reader has the additional advantage of being portable, so I can take it in my camera bag, and plug it into any computer. Thank you for looking into this for me!
