SX40hs blank screen and pictures blank

As the title says, the screen is black and when i take pictures they are black. I feel like the shutter is stuck. Does anyone have any experience with this? Camera is a little over a year old.

I have not had that problem myself but have some ideas what you can try. First it may be the display button is stuck have you tried pressing that and see if its ok? Second have you tried the AV accessory cable and see if you can view the images on an external TV ?

i can view the pictures on the camera and scroll thru the different display modes, everything is just blank/black and when i take a picture it is the same

Oh I understand now, this will sound silly but did you remember to take the lens cap off..Ive done that before.

Have you tried a reset to defualts?

Your shutter may be stuck but I would expect there to be an error code associated with that.

If you use a very slow shutter speed and look at the lens you can verify that ?

You can scroll through older pictures then but not take any new ones...if its not something simple as above I will most likely require service
